It’s not even training camp and Giants already trusting the wrong starter

The New York Giants are putting jobs on the line in the 2025 season with the wrong starting quarterback. The wrong cook in the kitchen, if you will.

The Giants brought in veteran Russell Wilson in the 2025 offseason in hopes that the veteran journeyman can stabilize an offense that desperately needs it with GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll on arguably the hottest seats of any GM/head coach duo in the league at this point. The problem is, they're putting their faith in the wrong guy already.

And it's not even training camp yet.

Giants trusting Russell Wilson in 2025 could be a huge mistake

At this stage of his career, we know that Russell Wilson is no longer the same guy who was one of the most dominant dual-threat quarterbacks as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. Although he rebounded nicely after a horrendous 2022 season in Denver (which was also plagued by injuries), Wilson floundered down the stretch with the Broncos in 2023 as well as with the Steelers in 2024.

As a former stud baseball player, perhaps it's fitting to say that at this point in his career, Wilson is like a starting pitcher who can't be counted on to go more than four or five innings. He's going to get you into trouble and you're going to need to call on the bullpen at some point.

So why wouldn't the Giants just rip off the bandage and get a move on to the Jaxson Dart era? It's not always that simple, of course, but Wilson's cash payout of $10.5 million this year might be indicative of the team's willingness to pull him off the field at a moment's notice and turn to Dart, especially if Dart has a strong camp.

This Giants team is ready to make some noise in the NFC East. They may not be at the same level as the Super Bowl Champion Eagles, but they have one of the best defensive fronts in football and just had a fantastic 2024 NFL Draft class, giving them something to really build on offensively.

Wilson is a quarterback who holds the ball too long, takes too many sacks, kills too many drives, and can't make plays with his legs like he once did. He's got the ability to raise the floor of the offense with his deep ball abilities, but you can only win so many games when you can only hit three-pointers.

Any amount of trust the Giants are putting in Wilson at this point feels misplaced. He's going to be 37 this year and the team has a young quarterback waiting in the wings. If they believed enough in Jaxson Dart to trade into the 1st round to get him, then Schoen and Daboll can't be afraid to do with Dart what they once did with Josh Allen, and let him fail forward as the franchise QB of the future.
