We all know by now that Jameis Winston is a walking sound bite. At this point, the New York Giants’ third-stringer should be considered one of the most entertaining men in football, but he has far more to offer Big Blue than just comedic chops and another locker room voice in the QB room.

In Saturday’s victory over the Jets, the former No. 1 overall pick went 6-11 with 110 passing yards in a performance that was headlined by a beautiful long ball to undrafted rookie Dalen Cambre. He also recorded a rushing touchdown on a QB sneak for the final score of the game.

Yet with first-round rookie Jaxson Dart impressing in preseason action and looking to snatch the QB2 role from Winston, the Florida State product has even been floated in trade rumors with quarterback-needy teams. However, he still delivered a powerful message to Giants fans following the 31-12 win.

Jameis Winston is the leader Giants fans didn’t know they needed

The 31-year-old was a key contributor in what was the first home victory of his Giants career. His “eat a W” routine has been meme-worthy for years, but the truth is, Winston continues to embrace every role asked of him, whether it be mentoring Dart, being a reliable backup for Russell Wilson, or just bringing energy back to the locker room.

And he even promised Giants fans that “it would be the first of many”. The Alabama native quickly won over Giants fans with his handshake with Tommy Devito and the viral clip of him hitting the crossbar in practice, but now, fans should be ready to run through a brick wall for this guy. He just bleeds charisma.

The former Heisman Trophy winner has accrued over 24,000 career passing yards and 150 passing touchdowns, but that also comes with 111 career interceptions.. He definitely still has what it takes to start in the NFL, but remains one of the league’s best backups.

Wilson is the incumbent starter until the 22-year-old out of Ole Miss takes over, but should the Super Bowl Champion struggle and Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka don’t deem Dart ready to start, Winston would be called upon to take meaningful snaps.

In seven starts with the Browns last season, the Pro Bowl quarterback threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, and has not been a full-time starter since before the COVID-19 pandemic. But he's an elite journeyman like Ryan Fitzpatrick was.

Even after signing Wilson, fans quickly bought into the idea of signing him because of the personality he provides, something that you desperately need to succeed in New York. Whether he sees the field this season or remains the ultimate backup, Winston has turned into a fan favorite with Big Blue for more reasons than one.
