The tale of this New York Giants season cannot be written without rookies Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo. After what was a miserable start to the year, Giants fans were rejuvenated thanks to the hope offered by the pair of rookies.

Looking like the team very much as their franchise quarterback and running back locked down, it was none other than Dart to Skattebo for a fitting first touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8. However, later in the first half, Giants fans' worst nightmares came to fruition.

Skattebo went down on the field, with an ankle injury, and it was obvious right away that this wasn't good. It was an ankle injury which brought the entire Giants sideline onto the field, taking a collective knee as their rookie running back writhed in pain.

Dart's reaction was the toughest to watch, though.

The first-year pro was driven to an emotional series of shouts as he knew his friend and teammate was going to be done for quite some time; more than likely the season.

Giants fans can't catch a break as Cam Skattebo suffers a severe ankle injury vs. Eagles

Along with Dart's reaction, Giants fans everywhere likely reacted the exact same way. It was painful to watch. It was an emotional scene, watching all of Skattebo's teammates rally around him as he was down.

It was one of those moments where time just stopped. Fans knew it wasn't good, just like when wide receiver Malik Nabers went down earlier this year.

Now, fans have to deal with the reality that is Skattebo and Nabers missing significant time while Dart is left to try and gut his way through a rookie campaign without his top two offensive weapons. In a long line of tough rookie campaigns, Dart's is up there in terms of unforeseen challenges to overcome.

Now, the Giants will depend on second-year running back Tyrone Tracy, who claimed the job late last season and looked like a real strong option in the back field, with or without Skattebo. Fortunately, Tracy's experience and dual-threat skill set will be there to allow to take some form of pressure off Dart, going forward.

We'll have to wait and see on further testing and results when it comes to a diagnosis on Skattebo, but as fans saw live on the air, it certainly appeared like a season ender; an unfortunate and premature way to close his rookie year.
