Who would have thought that Joe Schoen's day job as New York Giants general manager was only half his story? Here I was thinking the much-maligned GM had too much time to think about the decisions he's made, holding this team back. It turns out, I became a victim of assuming -- you know what happens when you assume, don't you?
While everyone else is asleep, the 46-year-old is wide awake. Under beds. Hiding in closets. Lurking in the shadows, quietly terrorizing opposing front office execs across the league while their eyes are shut. You'd have to think the lack of sleep has to mess with his decision-making, but I digress.
During his pre-draft press conference, Schoen all but confirmed he moonlights as the Boogeyman when he’s not GM-ing for the Giants, talking about how the real action is trading back on Day 2, when teams wake up and realize they have to go get their guy.
Classic Boogeyman.
Joe Schoen hints Giants could get aggressive on Day 2
Earlier in the press conference, Schoen shared that at least a couple of teams had called and were “sniffing around” the possibility of moving up. He also added that a trade back won’t happen until draft night, which, no duh -- makes sense, seeing as though he’ll need to see how the board falls before making any important decisions.
Which leads us to the 37th pick.
When the dust eventually settles on the first 32 picks on April 23, Friday’s Rounds 2 and 3 action presents Schoen and Co. with an interesting opportunity. Inevitably, a highly sought-after prospect will tumble down the board, and after a night of contemplation, there will be a team needing to scratch that itch of bringing him in. And teams with early second-rounders are in the sweet spot to oblige. Go Big Blue.
Schoen's comments lead me to believe that while trading out of the fifth pick is a possibility, they are much more likely to move back when Day 2 rolls around.
With an incomplete roster and seven picks, it’d be smart for the Giants to acquire as much draft capital as humanly possible to take more bites of the apple to get this thing turned around. Maybe fully embracing being the Boogeyman this year just means being the one driving the action on Day 2.
