Joe Schoen’s 2025 draft goal is not easy (but it is simple)

It's time to build.

Draft Day is officially here, and the New York Giants are on the clock! For months, Big Blue fans have wondered what the team will do during the 2025 NFL Draft after finishing 3-14 last season and possessing the third overall pick.

Over the last few months, the G-Men have been tied to several prospects, including Cam Ward (QB, Miami), Shedeur Sanders (QB, Colorado), Travis Hunter (WR/CB, Colorado), and Abdul Carter (Edge, Penn State). New York can't go wrong with whoever Joe Schoen decides to pick in the first round, as they could upgrade any of those positions.

While quarterback seemed like an option for the Giants in the first round for a while, Ward will likely go first overall to the Tennessee Titans. Sanders's stock has fallen out of the top three, and it would be too early to select Jaxson Dart. Big Blue also brought in veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency.

New York could draft Jalen Milroe in the second round, or find another option in the later rounds. Still, this year's quarterback draft class is not very deep, which leaves the Giants essentially deciding between Hunter and Carter at No. 3—they'll have to watch what the Cleveland Browns do with the second overall pick.

Despite not drafting a quarterback in last year's draft, Schoen did well drafting a talented rookie class headlined by wideout Malik Nabers at No. 6.

Nabers would have 109 receptions on 170 targets, 1,204 yards, and seven touchdowns in his rookie campaign. He set the franchise record for most single-season receptions, earning Pro Bowl honors. He is arguably the best Giants draft pick in the last five years.

While Nabers was impressive in year one, it wasn't just him who stood out in last year's rookie class—Giants fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy Jr. became a significant piece in New York's backfield alongside Devin Singletary. Both Nabers and Tracy Jr. were recognized with All-Rookie team honors.

Schoen also drafted safety Tyler Nubin, cornerback Dru Phillips, and tight end Theo Johnson, who all showed last season they have potential and could be significant factors in this franchise's future.

While Schoen was impressive at last year's draft, he'll need to step it up even more this year as the Giants look to improve and return to a winning record... and, eventually, a playoff berth. That could mean drafting a quarterback, which Schoen has not done since becoming the general manager.

Joe Schoen needs to crush the 2025 NFL Draft

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports recently listed five NFC teams that must ace the 2025 NFL Draft. The article named the Giants as one of the teams that need to have a good draft and continue to bring in instant playmakers like Nabers. It's no surprise. The team is 9-25 over the past two seasons and Schoen and Brian Daboll are on thin ice.

Benjamin also says the Giants must draft a quarterback who will be a sturdy, longer-term arm to succeed veterans Wilson and Winston. Russ and Jameis aren't going to play forever, and Tommy DeVito is not the long-term solution at signal-caller either.

Unless New York trades down, it's unlikely that they will get Ward or Sanders in the first round, but Milroe and Dart are still very much in play—depending on what happens in the first round and the beginning of the second.

The Titans, Browns, Giants, Steelers, Saints, and Rams could all be looking to add a quarterback in this year's draft too, and there could be other surprise teams that show interest, so Schoen must be smart with who he selects not to give anyone else an advantage at a top quarterback prospect.
