New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen spoke at a press conference last week and mentioned the team would “probably be signing a veteran defensive tackle early next week.”
Well, Schoen has delivered with the signing of 32-year-old defensive tackle Dean Lowry, formerly of the Packers and most recently the Steelers.
Lowry, the 6-foot-6, 300-pound interior lineman, can help the Giants’ DT group as a rotational veteran. Lowry will start off on the practice squad, but it seems like only a matter of time before the veteran finds his way onto the field. The G-Men have been adding and subtracting from the iDL group all summer, but now find themselves with a solid mix of both veterans and rookies.
After seven solid years with the Packers, Lowry was a rotational piece for the Steelers before tearing his ACL and missing the entire 2025 season.

The 10-year veteran offers a lot to the Giants’ room. He offers positional versatility, whether playing as a bigger, more edge-setting defensive end or playing head-up or in a gap. Lowry is a good chess piece to have. He doesn’t have freak athleticism. You won’t see him with elite bend around corners. He’ll leave that to his new teammates Brian Burns and Abdul Carter.
But what Lowry does bring to the table is veteran leadership, experience, and the main thing the Giants have seemed to be sorely lacking for a number of years now: run stuffing. Lowry is all about high energy, high effort, and a high motor. He plays passing lanes, and at 6-foot-6, his big body and frame are great for tipping passes and batting balls down at the line.
He’s a heavy-handed space eater who can take on double teams and leave his linebackers free to wreak havoc, and the Giants have the linebackers to do it now in the form of Tremaine Edmunds and Arvell Reese.
The Giants may have found another solid veteran for that room. They have some young defensive tackles in Darius Alexander, C.J. Okoye, and Bobby Jamison-Travis, and while they will see a fair amount of time during the season, all three still have plenty of work to do as they continue to learn the game.
Signing another scheme-versatile veteran similar to Chauncey Golston, someone who can play that EDGE/DT role like Lowry, helps the team in multiple ways. Lowry can help the younger players both on and off the field while providing the Giants with more experience up front.
