The Tennessee Titans' Tony Pollard seemed like an ideal solution for the running back-needy New York Giants. However, John Harbaugh appears to be thinking bigger ahead of the upcoming NFL trade deadline.

Harbaugh addressed the media following the Giants' bye week and was surprisingly transparent regarding their plans. The team's head coach said that if they made a move, it ideally wouldn't be for a "one-and-done kind of thing." He wants a "short-term and a long-term win" at the cost of draft capital, and understandably so, yet that effectively removes Pollard from the equation.

As good as Pollard has been lately, his age and contract status ostensibly work against him for Harbaugh and Co.

John Harbaugh essentially shuts down Giants-Tony Pollard trade

Pollard turns 30 in April and is on an expiring salary. The veteran playmaker has over 1,500 career touches and profiles as a rental at this stage. It's easy to see how he doesn't check all of Harbaugh's boxes as a player who can help in 2026 and beyond.

Despite not exactly fitting the bill of what Harbaugh's looking for, Pollard can be a valuable addition to New York's offense. The 2022 Pro Bowler's speed and explosiveness complement bruising tailback Cam Skattebo nicely; they're a solid — albeit unsexy — potential one-two backfield punch.

Over Tennessee's past two games, Pollard has turned 46 carries into 246 yards and a whopping five touchdowns, posting a healthy 5.35 yards per attempt. His 14.3 percent explosive run rate during this stretch is markedly higher than the league-wide season-long average of 10.2 percent, per Fantasy Points' data suite 2.0 ($).

Regardless, Harbaugh's comments suggest we should shift our focus elsewhere, at least for now. Perhaps the G-Men are preparing to go all-in on Indianapolis Colts star Jonathan Taylor. The NFC East leaders are reportedly among a handful of squads in the mix for his services, and they might be in the driver's seat.

Even if John Harbaugh wanted Tony Pollard, the Titans aren't budging

It takes two to tango, as the saying goes, and neither club is coming across as a willing dance partner at the moment. While Harbaugh signaled that New York is looking for something different, the Titans supposedly aren't keen on parting ways with Pollard.

Tennessee general manager Mike Borgonzi has "declined to engage in conversations" about possible Pollard deals, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. That's subject to change, of course, especially considering they're 1-7 and in the midst of a rebuild. Gutting the roster of usable parts comes at the expense of second-year quarterback Cam Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 draft, though.

Beyond Pollard and first-round rookie wide receiver Carnell Tate, Tennessee's skill-position corps leaves much to be desired. Without the former, moving the chains becomes even more challenging, let alone evaluating your young signal-caller. If the front office still has any faith in Ward's development as its franchise centerpiece, surrounding him with adequate talent feels like the bare minimum.
