On Tuesday, the New York Giants hosted free agent running back Najee Harris, showing that the team has an interest in adding to the running back room. While the team hasn’t made anything official with Harris yet, it’s clear that he has fans in New York’s building.
Giants’ head coach John Harbaugh is among those fans. Speaking with the media after Monday’s practice, the head coach spoke highly about Harris when asked about the running back. Harbaugh emphasized that he got excited at the sight of Harris because of the running back’s size, and went on to say that the free agent looked good in the work out.
"He’s coming back from the Achilles injury… and he looked good in the workout. He’s not back 100%, he’s not in football shape yet. So if we are able to do something, it’ll be a process. But that’ll be a guy who has a lot of experience. He’s a decorated vet. With those guys, generally, you just have to kind of see where they’re at when you get them. Sometimes it works out great, sometimes it’s just ok, and other times it doesn’t work out. Based on the work out, I would say, we feel like he’s got a shot. We just have to see how it goes."John Harbaugh
John Harbaugh speaks highly of Najee Harris following the running back’s workout with Giants
As Harbaugh noted during his comments, Harris spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers — coached by Harbaugh‘s brother Jim. Unfortunately, the running back was only able to play in three games before tearing his Achilles. In those three games, Harris had just 15 carries for 61 yards, and three receptions for 25 yards.
The devastating season was the running back’s first year in a new location, after playing his first four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In Pittsburgh, Harris started his career with four straight seasons with 1,000 rushing yards, and didn’t miss a game. He’s hoping to get back to that level of productivity and durability.
The Giants could be the team that gives Harris a chance to do that. Currently, New York’s running back depth chart is led by Cam Skattebo, with Tyrone Tracy Jr. serving as RB2, and Devin Singletary behind him. Adding Harris would mean increased competition for the RB2 and RB3 spots, and that may be just what the Giants are looking for.
