When John Harbaugh made Matt Nagy the offensive coordinator of the New York Giants, the reception among the fanbase was lukewarm. Some people trusted his vision, while many others criticized the hire due to his lack of recent success with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense.

However, the Super Bowl-winning head coach just helped Giants fans get right back on board with the Nagy hire by pursuing a reunion everyone saw coming. Harbs added his former Ravens OC, Greg Roman, to the coaching staff as a senior offensive assistant, likely with a lot of run game influence.

Roman was most recently the offensive coordinator of the Chargers, working as Jim Harbaugh's right-hand man, but he was fired after another early playoff exit. His last two OC stints weren't perfect, but he's one of the best run-game designers in football regardless of those recent struggles.

The Giants' decision to hire Greg Roman is the perfect decision to complement hiring Matt Nagy

Nagy's biggest weakness is scheming up the run game, as the Chiefs consistently fielded one of the NFL's weakest rushing attacks across his last few seasons in Kansas City. With that in mind, they trotted out a tandem of Isiah Pacheco and an aging Kareem Hunt in 2025, so he's not solely at fault.

Roman was also the OC during Lamar Jacksons first MVP season, so this could also turn out to help Jaxson Dart, especially in better utilizing his mobility to prevent his injury woes from becoming a trend. And working with Jackson, Justin Herbert, and Colin Kaepernick is a pretty stellar track record.

In 10 of his 12 seasons as an OC, the 53-year-old led a top 10 rushing offense. This bodes well for Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy, so if Nagy is game-planning through the air and working with Dart while Roman schemes up the run game, this is the outcome that best caters to everyone's strengths.

To me, this feels almost like the Giants have co-offensive coordinators, even though Nagy is the one with the title. To be honest, I'm still not totally on board with this offensive staff since they both come with red flags, but at least Harbs was able to reel fans back in with a silver lining by hiring Roman.

A reunion between Harbaugh and Roman always made sense, especially after the G-Men struck out on Todd Monken. After hiring him, fans expected Harbaugh to assemble an elite coaching staff, so bringing on another assistant with play-calling experience is a major step in the right direction.
