Giants fans should feel alarmed after instant Matt Nagy damage control

What an endorsement.

Giants fans, get ready to learn patience.

John Harbaugh has officially rounded out his coordinators with the hiring of former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for the same role in New York. The 47-year-old joins Christ Horton (special teams coordinator) and Dennard Wilson (defensive coordinator) as Harby's closest confidants, looking to pull this once-proud franchise out of irrelevance.

Well -- and I'm just going to say it because someone has to -- this is not the hire fans were hoping for. After weeks of build-up and bigger-name swings, landing on Nagy feels more like settling than striking.

It's never great when the beat is already doing damage control not 30 minutes after the hire. SNY's Connor Hughes took to social media to calm fans down in one of the craziest posts possible:

Essentially: don’t freak out over this potentially bad hire because Harbaugh could just fire him later. Thank you so much. That definitely makes everyone feel better. It also ignores the fact that Harbaugh has historically shown a ton of patience, even when things clearly aren’t working. He stuck with Greg Roman for four seasons in Baltimore before finally pivoting to Todd Monken.

What a bonkers endorsement... if you could even call it that.

The media already lining up a Matt Nagy escape hatch is telling

Nagy’s struggles are well documented. As head coach of the Chicago Bears, both Mitchell Trubisky and Justin Fields went from promising young quarterbacks to cautionary tales in a hurry.

The play-calling was suspect, the overuse of trick plays was odd, and the frequent abandoning of the ground game resulted in some truly unwatchable football.

That’s what makes this so concerning for Jaxson Dart. He’s a rookie quarterback in his formative years, and pairing him with a coach who hasn’t shown an ability to develop young passers is a real risk. Just look at how badly Trevor Lawrence was set back early in his career under Urban Meyer. It took years to undo that damage.

Is that what Harbs just signed up for? To be clear, Nagy isn’t Urban Meyer. But the concern is similar. His only real success came in Kansas City alongside Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, and even then, he wasn’t the one calling plays.

There’s something to be said about the media rushing out to reassure fans that this hire isn’t that bad because Harbaugh could always pull the plug. It’s not time to panic, but with proven offensive minds who have actually developed young quarterbacks, like Kliff Kingsbury, still available, this hire is puzzling at best.
