Apparently, the New York Giants aren't allowed to have nice things at quarterback this season.
After losing Jaxson Dart to a season-ending knee injury in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, the G-Men are now holding their collective breath over J.J. McCarthy, who exited Sunday's Week 9 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles with a hip injury.
With New York trailing 8-6 early in the third quarter, McCarthy took a huge hit from Eagles linebacker Zack Baun at the end of a three-yard run. The 23-year-old initially made his way to the blue medical tent, and backup quarterback Jameis Winston entered the game in relief.
Things got a little more concerning when FOX cameras showed McCarthy attempting a throw on the sidelines before grimacing in visible pain and bending over. He appeared to be grabbing at his right side, leading to some initial speculation about a possible rib or oblique injury.
McCarthy eventually left the medical tent and jogged into the locker room for further evaluation.
Sideline reporter Pam Oliver reported that the former top-10 pick is listed as questionable to return with a hip injury. Winston is under center in the meantime, and potentially losing another starting QB is about the last thing Giants fans wanted to see.
J.J. McCarthy injury history
Unfortunately, McCarthy is no stranger to the injury report.
The former Michigan standout missed his entire rookie season with the Minnesota Vikings after suffering a torn meniscus in 2024. His second season wasn't exactly smooth sailing, either, with ankle, concussion, and hand injuries limiting his availability.
Here's a look at the notable injuries McCarthy has dealt with since entering the NFL in 2024:
- November 2026, hip: McCarthy exited the Giants' Week 9 matchup against the Eagles after taking a hit from Zack Baun on a third-quarter run. He was evaluated in the medical tent before heading to the locker room and was officially listed as questionable to return.
- August 2026, ankle: An ankle injury kept McCarthy out of Minnesota's final preseason game before his eventual trade to New York.
- January 2026, hand: McCarthy aggravated his throwing-hand injury during the Vikings' Week 18 matchup and exited early.
- December 2025, right hand: A hairline fracture in his throwing hand forced McCarthy to miss a game.
- November 2025, concussion: McCarthy suffered a concussion and missed one game.
- September 2025, high ankle sprain: A Grade 3 high ankle sprain sidelined him for five games.
- August 2024, knee: McCarthy tore his meniscus during the preseason and underwent surgery, ending his rookie campaign before it began.
McCarthy took over as the Giants' starter in Week 7 against the Houston Texans after replacing Winston in the fourth quarter of New York's Week 6 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
