Giants all but guaranteed not to enter chaotic Shilo Sanders sweepstakes

Shilo won't be making his way to East Rutherford.

The New York Giants made a quiet, calculated move this week, one that speaks volumes without shouting. They claimed Beau Brade off waivers from the Ravens, and with it, probably slammed the final door shut on any outside rumblings linking Shilo Sanders to East Rutherford.

To be clear: Shilo to the Big Apple was never a real conversation. The Giants weren’t circling Sanders. They weren’t perusing through the Tampa tape. But when a name like that floats in the free agency pool long enough, speculation has a way of popping up. Especially when the depth chart’s thin and the safety room has some question marks.

That’s where things stood about a week ago. K’Von Wallace had just been released. Makari Paige and Raheem Layne were clinging to bottom-of-the-roster hopes. Special teams was still a puzzle. And in that moment, sure, maybe someone could’ve squinted and tried to find a fit for Sanders. But now that Brade is in the building, don’t count on it.

Beau Brade waiver claim spells the end of any Shilo Sanders Giants talk

The 23-year-old isn’t coming to East Rutherford to save the secondary. But he is the kind of player Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll gravitate toward. Just ask them. He’s dependable, tough, can play special teams, and above all, he didn’t literally punch away his shot in Tampa Bay.

That’s likely where this whole thing derailed for Sanders. After flashing some upside in Bucs camp and seemingly carving out a path to at least a practice squad spot, he blew it all up with one swing. In the preseason finale, he got himself tossed for punching Bills tight end Zach Davidson. Whatever goodwill he had built up got wiped out in a matter of seconds with one terrible decision.

Tampa Bay didn’t just cut him either — they left him completely out of their practice squad picture.

Big Blue didn’t just randomly grab a guy off waivers to fill out the backend of the depth chart. They liked that he carved out a role on special teams with the Ravens and stuck. They like the way he could fit on the field, in the locker room, and within the culture they’re building.

There was never really room for Sanders in the first place, especially not with the off-field attention and the inherent baggage that comes with his name. The Giants are trying to move away from unnecessary distractions. If Schoen and Daboll were going to entertain the idea, they would’ve done it already. Instead, they went with someone who's more their speed.

There wasn't much tying the two parties together before, but fans can completely rule any speculation out ahead. For now, the 53 is set. No looking back, only forward. It's full steam ahead as the G-Men get ready to take on the Commanders on the road in Week 1.
