The New York Giants’ quarterback search has been a mess, and now, it looks like they’re content to wait even longer for Aaron Rodgers to make up his mind. After striking out on everyone, Big Blue has spent the last week or so stuck in limbo, waiting for Rodgers to decide whether he wants to play for them, the Pittsburgh Steelers, or retire altogether. If it were up to Rodgers, he'd be with the Minnesota Vikings.
That should tell general manager Joe Scheon everything he needs to know, but here we are.
While most teams would be pushing for answers by now, the Giants are apparently fine letting Rodgers take his sweet, sweet time. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, “The Giants are not rushing him. They’re giving him his space.”
Translation: New York is fully at the mercy of a 41-year-old quarterback who has given every indication imaginable he isn't interested in playing for Big Blue.
This is just the latest chapter in a disastrous quarterback offseason for the Giants. At this point, waiting on Rodgers hasn’t landed them a quarterback, and waiting even more probably won’t either.
Giants lean fully into Aaron Rodgers’ timeline
Rodgers has been weighing his options for what feels like an eternity, and according to multiple reports, his top choice isn’t even New York or Pittsburgh. The Athletic recently reported that Rodgers is hoping the Vikings enter the mix, but as of now, there’s no indication they will. If they don’t, retirement is still on the table, because why play for the Giants when you can retire instead?
This is the guy Schoen is waiting on. And Rodgers must be eating it up. He loves a good ego stroke.
Meanwhile, New York continues to sit back and wait, even as the quarterback market dries up around them—or whatever's left of it. They’ve met with Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco, and Jameis Winston, but none of those options seem like the answer. They tried to get Mason Rudolph on a Zoom call—he passed. Even Mason Rudolph had better options.
This is a dangerous game for Schoen. If Rodgers drags this out until after the NFL Draft, the Giants could be left scrambling. They’ve been linked to trading up for Miami’s Cam Ward, but if that falls through, they're looking at Shedeur Sanders or bust. At this rate, the way luck's been falling for New York, I wouldn't bet on anything working out in the Giants' favor.
Maybe this is some kind of 4D chess move—giving Rodgers his space while other teams grow impatient, hoping he’ll appreciate the power trip and choose the Giants out of gratitude. But let’s be real, when has catering to Rodgers’ ego ever worked out for anyone?
At some point, the Giants need to wake up. Rodgers isn’t coming, and if he is, it's not because he necessarily wants to. The longer they wait, the more they embarrass themselves. And for what? A 41-year-old who’s already checked out? The quarterback market is drying up, and so is whatever credibility the G-Men have left.
