The New York Giants came into this season expected by many to be one of the worst teams in the NFL, and they have entirely met those expectations after starting the year 0-3 following a brutal 22-9 home loss against the previously winless Kansas City Chiefs.

Russell Wilson looked more like the over-the-hill veteran from their loss to the Washington Commanders instead of the resurgent comeback force he was against the Dallas Cowboys. His terrible performance against Kansas City was occasionally interrupted by rookie Jaxson Dart running a handful of plays, none of which were big gainers.

The Giants have inadvertently thrown even more gasoline on this raging inferno that is their quarterback situation, as Brian Daboll's decision to entice fans with occasional Dart plays before returning to Wilson has created an unnecessary bit of controversy.

Giants made a mistake by naming Jaxson Dart as QB2

The Giants had one of two paths forward they could have taken this season that would have made logical sense, but Daboll took the ill-fated third one. Dart needed to either a start right away or begin the year as the third-string quarterback behind Jameis Winston. Instead, Dart was named QB2.

If he were the inactive third string, Daboll can focus on trying to save his job with two veteran quarterbacks in Wilson and Winston, all while Dart (who came from a very basic Ole Miss offense) absorbs as much as he can before being thrown into the fire. Dart also wouldn't hear his name called every time Wilson stinks it up.

Daboll could have also gone all-in with Dart from the jump and hoped against hope that the spark he provides would be enough to get this team jump-started, all while going through the normal rookie growing pains. The record might be bad, but Dart would be gaining valuable on-the-job training.

Instead, it took Daboll not even a month to find himself in No Man's Land. The team is winless, four of their next six games come against teams who are undefeated, and Wilson has looked hopeless in two of New York's three games. All the while, Dart is tantilizingly teased to a fanbase who knows Wilson is staying in as the starter.

The Giants have now poisoned the well with Wilson, put Dart behind the 8-ball in his development, and got a fanbase that already wants Daboll's head on a silver platter even more aggravated. What a brilliant move, sir!
