The New York Giants have one of their most important drafts approaching, which could significantly alter the franchise's future if Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll don't make the right moves to improve the roster and help the team win in 2025.
The Giants have yet to draft their next franchise quarterback since Schoen and Daboll took over in 2022. They currently occupy the third overall pick and still need to address many positional needs... even after an eventful free agency.
So far in the Daboll era, the Giants have made just one playoff appearance, which came in his first season as the team's head coach. During that season, he also won the AP NFL Coach of the Year award, but the Giants have progressively worsened each year since.
Despite Daboll's first-year success, the Giants have been in a downward spiral. They are coming off their worst season in team history in what was supposed to be a special season honoring the franchise's 100th year. To make things worse, it ended with former Giants star running back Saquon Barkley leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory. The Giants lost 14 games, bringing Daboll's overall record as head coach to 19–33–1.
As we look ahead to the 2025 season, New York fans are wondering how long John Mara will keep Daboll in East Rutherford if things don't go as planned for the Giants next season.
B/R has Brian Daboll on the hottest seat among all NFL head coaches
Moe Moton of Bleacher Report recently tiered every NFL head coach's seats by temperature: freezing cold, new and cool, room temperature, warm, heated, and blazing hot heading into the 2025 season. The article listed Brian Daboll and Kevin Stefanski on the blazing hot seats.
Moton couldn't have put it more simply:
"Daboll has the hottest seat among NFL head coaches. This offseason, team brass needed time to decide on his job security, which is a clear sign of trouble."
Moton mentioned that Daboll has failed the team as an offensive-minded coach, as evidenced by how quarterback Daniel Jones regressed the last few seasons and lost his roster spot last year. He adds that the Giants have been one of the league's lowest-scoring teams the last two years, and if that continues, Daboll may not finish the 2025 season.
Daboll is the fifth head coach following Tom Coughlin's departure from the franchise in 2015. You can imagine Mara is tired of losing and hiring a new head coach every few years. So, having Daboll start 2025 on the hot seat is not ideal for the team, and this draft becomes even more critical for the Giants organization.
