Giants facing Brian Daboll decision with no clear answers in sight

To Daboll, or not to Daboll—that is the question.

The New York Giants’ 2024 season has been one to forget, but the future of head coach Brian Daboll is anything but settled. After breaking a 10-game losing streak with a 45-33 win over the Indianapolis Colts, Daboll made his case for continuity, praising the effort of his players and staff despite the dismal results.

However, with a 3-13 record, Daboll finds himself squarely on the hot seat. Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch face a franchise-defining decision: is Daboll the man to lead the team into a pivotal 2025 offseason?

Reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero underline that Mara values patience but acknowledges the growing unrest among fans. Mara’s October comments favoring continuity have been tested as planes bearing “fire everyone” banners flew over MetLife Stadium and fan apathy grew. While Mara historically avoids drastic mid-rebuild changes, the possibility of drafting a franchise-altering quarterback has raised the stakes.

Complicating matters is the distinction between Daboll and GM Joe Schoen, who were hired as a duo in 2022 but are reportedly not a “package deal.” If Mara believes Schoen can make the right pick with the likely No. 1 overall selection in April, Daboll may not be extended the same grace.

Will John Mara Da-boll with a coaching change in 2025?

Daboll’s tenure began with optimism after he led the Giants to a surprise playoff win in 2022, earning NFL Coach of the Year honors in the process. But the magic evaporated quickly. A season defined by injuries, questionable roster management, and poor game-planning has raised doubts about whether Daboll is the right leader for a franchise in desperate need of stability.

Despite his pedigree as an offensive guru, Daboll has overseen an offense that ranks second to last in scoring (16.3 points per game) this season—a brutal indictment of his play-calling and quarterback development skills.

One point working in Daboll’s favor is Mara’s historical aversion to “blowing it all up.” However, Mara isn’t blind to the reality of back-to-back losing seasons and the risk of wasting another crucial offseason.

With a top pick potentially in play, Mara must decide if Daboll can finally bring his vaunted “Josh Allen magic” to the Meadowlands with a new rookie QB. If not, the franchise might feel compelled to cut ties now rather than limp into another season of uncertainty.

Daboll’s performance against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 18—regardless of the outcome—likely won’t move the needle much. The decision will hinge on whether ownership sees enough value in continuity or believes a fresh start is the only path forward. For now, Daboll’s fate remains the biggest domino yet to fall in what promises to be a transformative offseason for Big Blue.
