The New York Giants grabbed another promising linebacker in the 2026 NFL Draft in Arvell Reese from Ohio State. He now joins an elite room of second-level defenders with Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Tremaine Edmunds. But all of those additions can't pull attention away from the trade buzz surrounding Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Thibodeaux has been an up-and-down presence for this franchise, and the 2025 season saw him at his absolute worst. Sparking trade rumors galore, even speculated by Fansided.com's own Austen Bundy.

The edge defender has been the subject of trade talks throughout the offseason, but the G-Men may choose to hold onto him. He is going into the fifth-year option on his initial contract, so he would need a new deal after this season is over.

Giants have no reason to trade Kayvon Thibodeaux

The Giants are going all-in on the 2026 season. With new head coach John Harbaugh, second-year starting quarterback Jaxson Dart, and a revolutionized wide receiver room, the offensive side of the ball is poised to be a highlight reel for all 17 games.

But the emphasis was on the defensive front-seven in the draft, as well as the signing of Edmunds in free agency. Losing Dexter Lawrence was a big hit, but there is enough talent to make amends for his loss in the middle of the defense.

For Thibodeaux, all signs are pointing toward his exit from the Giants, as this is likely his last shot to make a lasting impression. Without his 2023 run, in which he had 11.5 sacks and started all 17 games, No. 5 would likely be long gone by now.

The skill is there, but it is inconsistent. That cannot happen with a blossoming young linebacking core around him that is eager to get out there and dominate. Thibodeaux could be standing in the way of greatness proving itself on the field.

Every week of the 2026 season is going to be a tryout for the fifth-year defender. One bad game, one bad snap, and his placement on this team is in jeopardy. But until that happens, he has to remain a prominent figure for the Giants' present and future.

At 25 years old, he is stepping into his prime. The numbers and impact on the field should reflect a positive outcome for the Giants. There are no more excuses at this point.

Likewise, if Carter starts to do more in his second season in the NFL and performs better than Thibodeaux. Then the reality of moving on comes into play.
