Sometimes, fulfilling a pipe dream is as simple as making a trip to Lowe’s and taking a nap... and maybe a superstar cornerback ostracizing himself enough that his teammates don’t vote him captain despite arguably being the best player on the roster.
The New York Giants haven’t necessarily been “involved” in the Christian Gonzalez trade speculation. That hasn’t stopped them from making an almost crazy amount of sense as a landing spot if New England ever decides to move him.
We’ve all heard of “Where’s Waldo?” Well, I challenge you to play a new version called “Where’s Gonzo?” Take a look at the Patriots’ captains for the upcoming season and tell me where Christian Gonzalez is:

If you couldn’t find him, it’s because he’s not one of them. That’s right. Head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed that the Pats’ six captains were decided by a player vote, and Gonzo didn’t make the cut. His teammates clearly know he’s one of the best players on the roster. Apparently, that wasn’t enough to put a “C” on his chest.
And while that might not seem like much, the timing sure is interesting. Gonzalez’s ongoing contract dispute has already created plenty of tension in New England, and now his teammates have left him out of the team’s leadership group.
It could be the biggest hint yet that this whole thing is heading somewhere ugly, potentially making a trade more realistic than ever before. And that’s great news for the G-Men.

The thought of Pats fans rolling their eyes at this entire premise is comedy gold, and maybe they’re right. Not being voted captain doesn’t automatically mean Gonzo is... gonzo and packing his bags and putting his house on Zillow.
Still, with his contract fiasco already casting a pretty massive cloud over everything in New England, it’s getting harder to brush this off as nothing. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
And if Gonzalez does become available, I mean, come on. This is the kind of blockbuster trade that might bring actual Blockbuster -- I'm talking physical movie rentals -- back to life.
The G-Men need a cornerback like a pub needs a Guinness. Paulson Adebo didn’t exactly inspire confidence in Year 1 of his three-year, $54 million deal. Greg Newsome II is already on his third team in six seasons, and the idea of him has always been better than the player. Deonte Banks looked good this summer, which is awesome, but are we really ready to forget three years of borderline unplayable football because he played well against backups in the preseason? And Colton Hood is 21. Give the rookie a second.
Gonzalez would instantly become the best cornerback in the room, and arguably the best New York has had since Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2016.
It’d cost a fortune in trade assets (draft picks) and an even bigger fortune to extend him -- he’s looking for more than $33 million annually. If Big Blue truly believes Jaxson Dart is the guy, this is the exact window to do something stupidly aggressive. Like, say, trading for a 24-year-old All-Pro cornerback.
