The New York Giants aren't loaded with top-tier talent. Only a few players on the roster could be considered elite at their position, one of those being the currently injured Malik Nabers. Big Blue simply doesn't have the starpower of top Super Bowl contenders like the Los Angeles Rams.
But that doesn't mean that they should be counted out. John Harbaugh's squad has the collective talent to overcome its lack of elite players.
If the pieces on the roster can come together to form a cohesive unit, the Giants will emerge as a surprising force in a competitive NFC.
John Harbaugh's Giants are greater than the sum of their parts
Fans in New York have seen it play out before. A roster without multiple headliners can go on a run in the postseason if the players jell perfectly. Outside of Michael Strahan at the end of his career, and arguably Osi Umenyiora, the 2007 Giants didn't have any players widely regarded as superstars. The 2011 squad, even less so.
Matching the success of those teams is too heavy a burden to put on a Giants squad just entering training camp, but they can take a note from the two championship rosters on how to come together.
With the right set of circumstances, the thought of a postseason run isn't as crazy as it may seem.
Bleacher Report writer Alex Kay sees the vision. In an article giving a reason each team shouldn't be overlooked, he said, "The New York Giants are ready to emerge as a legitimate Super Bowl threat on the heels of a transformative offseason. With John Harbaugh taking over as head coach, the stage is set for this potential-laden squad to put all its high-upside pieces together and make a run."
The G-Men have multiple young players ready to flirt with "star" territory. Abdul Carter is a slight increase in converting his pressures into sacks away from rivaling the league's top pass rushers in production. Jaxson Dart is set up for a big year with Malik Nabers, another breakout candidate, back in the fold.
To paint an even rosier picture, New York doesn't have any glaring weaknesses left on the roster. While a couple of groups leave something to be desired, veterans like DJ Reader and Odell Beckham Jr. should help plug important gaps.
With an experienced coaching staff leading the way, you don't have to squint too hard to see a competitive team. We're not guaranteeing a Super Bowl in August, but this group is set up to be better than expected.
