Giants fans better hope bombshell Eagles' OC rumor is more fact than fiction

For as much as New York Giants fans love watching their team be competent for the first time in what feels like an eternity, a feeling that's just as sweet is seeing the Eagles look incompetent. Say what you want about hiring John Harbaugh, but at least he'll assemble a solid coaching staff in New York.

A main reason as to why the Eagles fired Kevin Patullo in the first place was their belief they could easily land a superior OC, but not so fast. After being turned away by Mike McDaniel, they're practically bringing any play-caller with a pulse in for an interview, and it was Matt Nagy's turn.

It's funny how the tables turn, because it wasn't too long ago that Philly fans were ragging on the G-Men for interviewing Darren Rizzi and Lou Anarumo for their coaching position. But now, the Eagles are taking a look at one of the most overrated play-callers in football, so this is a good feeling.

Giants fans can only laugh as Eagles' OC search is getting desperate

The 47-year-old was a finalist for the Tennessee Titans' head coaching job, but the Chiefs aren't retaining him after bringing back Eric Bienemy as their OC. But with how desperate the Eagles are, anything has to be better than Mike Kafka, Zac Robinson, and Bobby Slowik... or so we thought.

They were chasing Brian Daboll and now he's staring down other opportunities, but Nagy is not the play-caller to answer the Eagles' prayers. Ever since he resumed play-calling duties in Kansas City after Bienemy left, the offense has gotten progressively worse every season to the point where he's made Patrick Mahomes look like a shell of himself. How do you do that with a generational QB?

It's become evident that Nagy's success was a product of the talent he was equipped with. He had Travis Kelce, Kareem Hunt, and Travis Kelce at his disposal his last time calling plays, yet the Chiefs' offense looked borderline unwatchable with Kelce, Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, and Isiah Pacheco.

The former Bears' head coach and longtime Andy Reid protege has a wealth of experience as a play-caller, but it isn't that successful.

Matt Nagy's total (yardage, not scoring) offense ranks as a play-caller since 2018:

  • 2025: 20th
  • 2024: 16th
  • 2023: 9th
  • 2022: N/A
  • 2021: 24th
  • 2020: 26th
  • 2019: 29th
  • 2018: 21st

Hiring Nagy isn't a ceiling move; it's chomping at the bit for the first experienced OC they can find, who hasn't enjoyed sustained offensive success in nearly a decade. The Philadelphia offense already looked like a caricature of itself earlier this season, and that was with multiple stars in tow.

He wasted enough talent over the years, so there's no telling what hiring him would do after the Patullo saga. The Eagles need an OC to elevate Jalen Hurts and an offense full of elite weapons, but if this happens, it'll make the Giants' path to the top of the NFC East that much easier.
