It didn’t take long for the New York Giants to turn the page on the preseason. After an unexpectedly dominant 3-0 showing — outscoring opponents 107-47 — one of the team’s biggest summer standouts reportedly won’t be sticking around.

New York has until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to trim the roster from 90 to 53, but Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll, and the rest of the front office aren’t exactly procrastinators. Just hours after demolishing the Patriots 42-10, Big Blue started making moves.

According to The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, wide receiver and special teams standout Montrell Washington will not make the 53-man roster for the 2025 season:

Talk about ripping the Band-Aid off. The front office wasted no time moving on from the 26-year-old after the preseason finale. Instead of deliberating and debating the pros and cons of keeping him over someone else, Schoen gave it a few hours, then made the call.

The former Samford standout had been one of the team’s biggest offseason surprises. He was always on the bubble, but after hauling in seven catches for 105 yards across three preseason games — and flashing all throughout camp — it felt like there’d at least be a real conversation.

A few things were moving against him, the biggest being the ascension of undrafted rookie Beaux Collins. The 6-foot-3 receiver all but solidified his roster spot against the Jets, making it even harder for Washington to earn a role. Secondly, while he's had a strong camp and moments in preseason, he just ultimately didn't show the consistency needed to secure a spot.

Originally a fifth-round pick by the Broncos in 2022, Washington landed with the Chiefs’ practice squad in 2023 after being waived and picked up a Super Bowl ring in the process. He bounced between the practice squad and active roster last season before signing with the Giants this February.

Washington made his presence felt this summer. He’s done enough to stick in the league, whether that’s on the Giants’ practice squad or elsewhere remains to be seen. But his release is a gut punch for fans and a reminder of what the NFL stands for: Not For Long. He deserves another shot. It just probably won’t be in East Rutherford.
