Overlooked Giants WR is turning heads at camp (and it’s not who you think)

Jaxson Dart’s unexpected favorite target is making a case to crack the Giants’ roster this summer.

Jaxson Dart’s favorite wide receiver in New York Giants’ training camp hasn’t been Malik Nabers. It hasn’t been Wan’Dale Robinson, Jalin Hyatt, or Darius Slayton either. The first-round rookie has shined in camp while flashing a rapport with Montrell Washington.

As the All-SEC quarterback continues to turn heads over the last few days with his touch and ball placement, the 26-year-old wideout has been on the receiving end of some of his best throws. The chemistry is real, and it’s been apparent to anyone who has been watching in camp.

The pair connected again on Saturday morning in a 1v1 drill when Washington torched a DB and Dart dropped the deep ball right in the bucket. How’s that for a glimpse at the future?

And this doesn’t talk about the play from Thursday that took social media by storm. The Ole Miss standout delivered an absolute Dart (pun intended) to find Washington in a tight window with two defenders in the area. The 22-year-old trusted his guy, and he delivered.

It’s an unexpected breakout for a player who wasn’t even expected to crack the 53-man roster a week ago. But Bryce Ford-Wheaton’s season-ending Achilles tear left New York needing receiver depth and opened the door for Washington, Beaux Collins, or Dalen Cambre to take advantage

It's a full-fledged camp battle, and the 5-foot-10 pass-catcher is making it hard for the Giants to turn him away.

Montrell Washington has made a serious push to make the Giants’ Week 1 roster

He has bounced around practice squads since being taken by the Broncos in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. In his short career, Washington has just five carries for 30 yards and two receptions for four yards.

The craziest part is that the Samford product hasn’t even appeared in an NFL game since 2022, when he appeared in 15 games, starting one. He spent the last two seasons on and off the Chiefs’ practice squad, winning a ring with the 2023 team, before signing a futures deal with Big Blue just a few days after Super Bowl Sunday.

This is a player who has been in receiver rooms with guys like DeAndre Hopkins, Courtland Sutton, Rashee Rice, Jerry Jeudy, Xavier Worthy, and JuJu Smith-Schuster. And he’s no stranger to playing with Giants’ QB1 Russell Wilson, as he played with the 10-time Pro Bowler in his rookie season.

The Georgia native has also practiced with guidance from Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. He’s had some pretty good mentors throughout his career, and that experience is beginning to show despite the hiatus from suiting up on Sundays.

But now in East Rutherford, the former FCS All-American has taken advantage of his latest shot and is making a real case to stick around beyond the summer.
