Giants get some unexpected juice from a brutal Jalen Hurts prediction

Boy, this could be bad for the Eagles.

Considering that he’s only made 12 starts, it’s hard to take issue with the idea that Jaxson Dart is the “worst” of the NFC East’s four quarterbacks.

And while Dart still has a long way to go, Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr just gave the New York Giants reason for optimism. And, perhaps more importantly, it comes at Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles’ expense.

Orr predicted that Hurts will throw the fewest touchdown passes of any NFC East starting quarterback this season. All four quarterbacks—Dart, Hurts, Dak Prescott, and Jayden Daniels—are healthy and good to go for training camp.

“New season, new offensive coordinator and no A.J. Brown,” Orr wrote. “That means new challenges for Jalen Hurts, in addition to the old ones which never seem to have left him behind.”

Ouch.

Jalen Hurts’ offensive issues could be excellent news for Jaxson Dart’s Giants

The Eagles’ inconsistent offense dates back several years, though their Super Bowl LIX victory at least paused the difficult conversations regarding Hurts.

Last season cost Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo his job, and rumors have mounted throughout the offseason about Hurts’ leadership and ability to be a franchise quarterback.

As for Dart, the only significant concern involves his health after being evaluated for numerous concussions last year.

It’s nonetheless telling that Orr has such little faith in Hurts, who still has DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert. Philadelphia also added Elijah Moore in free agency and selected USC's Makai Lemon at No. 20.

Enough has been said about the Giants’ various offensive additions, and that was before Monday’s veteran-minimum-spending surge on Odell Beckham Jr., Braxton Berrios, and JuJu Smith-Schuster.

The conversation here shouldn’t be whether the Giants have a superior offense than the Eagles’. It’s instead about which team is in better shape to succeed with their quarterback.

And, to be clear, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Dart is “better” than Hurts. If anything, that’s a simplistic and flawed perspective.

Objectively speaking, Dart is still unproven, whereas we’ve had five-plus seasons of Hurts to truly have a feeling for who he is. At his best, he’s a fine starter who benefits from an All-Pro running back and the Tush Push.

The NFC East has arguably the league’s two most overrated quarterbacks in Hurts and Prescott, though at least Hurts owns a Super Bowl win. Prescott and the Cowboys haven’t even advanced beyond the NFC Divisional Round.

Most football fans, and understandably so, would still take Prescott over Dart in a heartbeat. We’ll just have to see what those same viewers say if they’re asked about Dart vs. Hurts come December.
