If there’s one thing I hate doing, it’s telling people “I told you so.” But when it comes to my fandom of the New York Giants and matters pertaining to the Dallas Cowboys, I’ll happily pause any and all modesty to bring you the latest episode of America’s Team being more stuck than ever.
About three weeks ago, I told Cowboys fans to wake up from their latest delusional fever dream.
When the Detroit Lions declined linebacker Jack Campbell’s fifth-year option due to the NFL's flawed positional salary system, the Star praisers did what they do best and immediately started pretending like he was already on the team. The Landry Hat even spun the unsurprising news into how the Cowboys would miraculously land the All-Pro linebacker in next year's free agency.
I tried to warn those Mad Landry Hatters that Detroit’s move wasn’t a rejection. It was simply avoiding a $22 million one-year cap hit to clear the runway for a long-term deal at a more reasonable price per season.
Former Giants LB Bobby Okereke is now arguably the Cowboys' only option
With Campbell officially off the board, the Cowboys have backed themselves into a dangerous corner -- oh, no.
Their stubborn refusal to make the easy, logical move has stripped away their security blanket. Now, former Giants captain Bobby Okereke is no longer just the obvious solution; he’s arguably the only solution -- especially in relation to the remaining talent left on the open market capable of actually contributing to their shaky linebacker room.
The free-agent bargain bin has officially been picked clean of the elite talent. But that doesn’t mean Okereke is a scrub. Far from it.
Dallas desperately needs a proven, green-dot linebacker who can step in on Day 1, command the defense, and get 100-plus tackles. The 29-year-old fulfills every single one of those requirements. For what it's worth, we've been on the Bobby-to-DFW for a while.
So, will Dallas swallow their pride and actually pay the man? As a Giants fan, I am sincerely hoping Jerry Jones does his best Jerry Jones impression and trip over his own feet. If the Cowboys actually stumble into making the smart move, Okereke genuinely fixes their glaring hole at linebacker.
But this is the Jones family we are talking about. Betting on them to make the obvious move has never exactly been a winning strategy. Also, at the very least, at least they're not getting Jack Campbell any time soon.
