Giants go best player available but ignore biggest weakness in latest mock

Interesting move.

The laundry list of needs the New York Giants have to fill this offseason to become competitive is laughably long. They need help along the offensive line, defensive line, cornerback, linebacker, wide receiver, tight end, safety, and just the most important position in professional sports, quarterback.

That's why James Jones' criticism over Aaron Rodgers being interested in coming to the G-Men was understandable, especially knowing half of his criteria for his new team is that he wants them to be competitive. That, sir, is not these New York Giants. Regardless, general manager Joe Schoen is armed with roughly $48 million in cap space and eight draft picks to repair as much damage as humanly possible to avoid another catastrophic year.

Many mock drafts have the Giants securing their future signal caller with their first-round pick... maybe it's time to get comfortable with a different outcome.

NY Giants select Travis Hunter in PFF's latest Mock Draft

Landing a generational talent with a first-round pick is hardly a problem. In fact, several scouts believe Hunter is the only truly generational talent in the class. Well, in Trevor Sikkema’s latest mock draft for PFF, it looks like the Giants are passing on a quarterback and getting generational by selecting Travis Hunter No. 3 overall.

That should be some consolation prize for missing out on Penn State's Abudl Carter (Titans) and Miami’s Cam Ward, who is mocked to go to the Cleveland Browns at No. 2. That means Shedeur Sanders was on the board and the Giants still passed.

"I’ll be honest: I think the Giants are in a tough spot. They brought back their head coach and general manager, both on hot seats, with the understanding that 2025 must be better despite not having a quarterback. That makes me think they will do everything they can to acquire a proven veteran quarterback, especially after reportedly swinging and missing on Matthew Stafford."

This is where things get tricky. The Giants' quarterback situation is still very much unresolved, and while Hunter is undeniably a future star, this pick does nothing to solve their biggest issue. If New York passes on a quarterback at No. 3, it likely means they have their eyes on a veteran option—whether that’s Aaron Rodgers, Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, or someone else entirely.

The logic here is obvious. Schoen and Brian Daboll are fighting for their jobs, and tying their fate to a rookie quarterback in a draft class without a surefire franchise guy? That’s a gamble they might not be willing to take. Instead, they could look to patch up the defense with a playmaker like Hunter while securing a stopgap veteran under center.

Hunter is an electric, two-way talent that could bring a serious spark to the Giants' defense while also dabbling at receiver. Pairing him with Malik Nabers would make for one of the most exciting young duos in football, and given how many problems this roster has, adding an elite talent at potentially two positions isn’t the worst thing in the world.

If the Giants are truly going to pass on a quarterback, they better have a legitimate plan in place. Because fans have been down this road before, and if 2025 turns into another disaster season because of a bad quarterback situation, there won’t be any excuses left.
