The New York Giants are working their way down to 53, and not every move is going to sit well with fans. Among Tuesday’s early roster cuts, defensive lineman Elijah Chatman was one of the first surprises to hit the wire. And depending on how the rest of the day plays out, it might end up being the biggest shock of them all.

Per The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, Chatman has been released after spending the summer working with the starting defense and taking reps at fullback in the preseason. The move comes after what looked like a secure roster bid for the former undrafted free agent out of SMU, who was widely seen as one of the most versatile and physical players on the roster bubble. If anyone had done enough to earn a spot, it was probably him.

Instead, Chatman’s run might be over... at least for now. His limited value on special teams and a crowded defensive tackle room may have ultimately cost him. But considering how often he was featured with the first-team defense, and how unique his skill set is, it’s still a tough one to figure out.

Elijah Chatman’s release highlights Giants’ push for size over versatility

Chatman playing offense and defense wasn't a novelty. He played both sides because he's good enough. He took real snaps at fullback in back-to-back preseason games and looked the part. He logged 27 snaps at the position in college, rushed for over 1,600 yards in high school, and spent the summer breaking facemasks during goal-line drills. The goal line package was going to be incredible.

He was also a reliable piece up front. Undersized at 6-foot, 278 pounds, but explosive, strong, and quick off the snap. His tape never lacked effort. And when the team needed a spark, he delivered. The 24-year-old became the human highlight reel fans didn't know they needed. And now, that role's left vacant.

If there was any doubt about DJ Davidson’s roster status, this pretty much settles it. Davidson came on strong towards the backend of camp. Still, choosing Davidson over Chatman feels more like choosing size over anything else. He's not more skilled.

The Giants appear to be prioritizing bigger bodies up front and leaving the multi-role spots for... other guys. Chatman could still find his way back on the practice squad if he clears waivers, but for now, he’s the first real surprise cut of the day.

There will be more coming, but this one’s going to be hard to top.
