What a terrible way to start Tuesday. And what a ride. The New York Giants made it official on Monday. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, quarterback Tommy DeVito has been released ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline. The move ends one of the more entertaining and emotional roster battles of the summer and trims the quarterback room down to three.

It’s not a shocking development, but it won’t make it any easier of a pill to swallow. DeVito had an outstanding preseason and proved — once again — that he belongs on an NFL roster. But the numbers just weren’t on his side. With Russell Wilson locked in as the starter, Jaxson Dart already making his case as the future, and Jameis Winston holding down the veteran backup role, there just simply wasn’t enough room.
The G-Men were never going to carry four quarterbacks, and no one expected them to. But after everything DeVito did to earn a shot, it still feels like a tough way to go out. He completed 30-of-38 of his passes this preseason, threw four touchdowns, and looked sharper than he ever has. It just didn’t matter in the end.

Now the attention turns to what happens next. The Giants would love to bring DeVito back on the practice squad, but that depends entirely on whether he clears waivers.
Given how weak some backup QB situations are around the league, that’s far from guaranteed. DeVito isn’t a long-term answer, but he’s done more than enough to show he can be a viable option in the right spot.
He still has a connection with the coaching staff. He still has a relationship with Dart. He still means something to this fanbase. There's always the practice squad, so if he does clear waivers, it is possible he sticks around. But the odds of that happening are slim.
This might be the end of the fan favorite chapter as fans have come to know it. The jersey might change. The cutlets might travel. But he made his mark while he was here... and no roster move can undo that. Tommy (insert Italian dish) will forever be one of the most beloved players in franchise history.
Let's take a quick moment to pour one out for the 27-year-old who instantly won over a fanbase that needed some good in their lives. It's been one heckuva time.
