The New York Giants have finally made a big quarterback move after losing Jaxson Dart for the rest of the season, trading a fifth-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for former No. 10 overall pick J.J. McCarthy.
In theory, this is a solid depth pickup. McCarthy will be the No. 2 behind Jameis Winston for the rest of the 2026 season and will compete for the QB2 role in 2027 when Dart recovers from his season-ending injury. However, Joe Schoen may have unwillingly created a controversy that will cloud the 2027 season.
McCarthy won't be viewed as a starter going forward, but he has enough potential behind him to start getting fans to question Dart's viability if he ends up stumbling out of the gate in 2027. This won't be a full-blown quarterback controversy, but it could be one step shy.

Dart has shown all the signs of being a franchise quarterback, but he is far from a sure thing. His inability to stay healthy will mean that he will enter his third season without a full 17 games' worth of starts under his belt. With the Giants needing to figure out how much confidence they should have in Dart going forward, McCarthy could amplify Dart's mistakes.
It's easy to forget, but McCarthy was once quite a heralded prospect once upon a time. After losing just one game as a starter in his college career at Michigan, McCarthy was thought of as one of the reasons the 2024 quarterback class was as hyped as it was. McCarthy was one of six quarterbacks selected within the first 12 picks.
Even though the bloom has largely come off this rose after his terrible start to life as a pro, McCarthy's pedigree as a first-round pick who, like Dart, has also not started a full season of games. This will lead to a good chunk of fans wondering if Nine can be the more efficient option under center if Dart starts to falter.

While Dart wouldn't lose his starting job to McCarthy unless he just completely melts down or suffers some sort of physical drawback from his repeated injuries, McCarthy is now a legitimate challenger behind him who would like nothing more than to prove he can win games for yet another Harbaugh coach at a different level.
Imagine if Winston starts to falter in 2026, and New York makes a change by sliding McCarthy into the starting lineup. Imagine if he holds his own and wins some games. 2027 will then be dominated by vacillating between the guy who hypothetically kicked it into gear in 2026 in McCarthy and the established long-term face in Dart.
While that scenario exists on many 50/50 variables all coming up snake eyes for Dart, as well as McCarthy playing well above his usual level, it's not the most unrealistic future that could come to fruition. Until Dart returns to action and lights it up in a way that leaves no doubt, the McCarthy question will continue hanging over this team.
