Jaxson Dart erased early panic with strong bounce-back after rough camp start

Chalk it up to some first-day jitters.

It wasn’t exactly the rollout the New York Giants were hoping for when Jaxson Dart’s first training camp pass went viral for all the wrong reasons. Imagine a pick-six to Nic Jones on Day 1. In front of a fan base that’s seen enough quarterback disasters to last three lifetimes.

Cue the overreaction crowd.

What actually matters in July is whether a rookie quarterback can clean things up the next time out. Dart’s interception on opening day wasn’t great. But on Day 2, he got back to business and threw a back shoulder touchdown to Jalin Hyatt in the front corner of the end zone. Hyatt adjusted his body, made a great catch, and for the first time all week, Dart looked like he belonged on the field.

Jaxson Dart gave the Giants something to work with on Day 2

Dart followed that touchdown with a better stretch in red zone 1-on-1s. He worked ahead of Jameis Winston again, ran the second unit, and looked more comfortable running the offense. The ball was coming out cleaner. The reads weren’t forced. His receivers had real chances to make plays.

He threw five touchdowns in that drill. Zach Pascal, Bryce Ford-Wheaton, and Montrell Washington all got theirs. He even threw an absolute laser to fellow rookie Thomas Fidone II, who made a spectacular one-handed grab. Even undrafted Da’Quan Felton elevated for another score not long after.

Dart wasn’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard, but he looked capable of running the offense.

Then came another red zone interception. Dart tried to beat Tre Hawkins on a sideline throw to Pascal, but the timing was late, and the corner didn’t bite on the fake. Hawkins cut underneath and took it away. That makes two picks in the red zone in two days... not exactly ideal, but mistakes are bound to happen.

Head coach Brian Daboll even said as much, saying, "He's [Dart] going to make those mistakes."

Unofficially, Dart went 4-of-8 with a touchdown and an interception. Training camp stats don't mean much, but the way he responded after Wednesday will. He just looked better. He moved through his progressions instead of locking onto the first read. When he settled down, he made the throws that got the G-Men excited about drafting him in the first place.

Nobody in the building is suggesting depth chart movement after one decent practice. Duh. Russell Wilson will be the starter. Dart isn’t taking anyone’s job in July. But this was the kind of day Dart needed. The pick-six on Day 1 was brutal. Day 2, Dart gave people something else to talk about.

If nothing else, he looked like a rookie quarterback trending the right way. For a team that’s trying to build something... anything sustainable at the position, that’s literally all that matters.
