Giants kick off Malik Nabers replacement plan with head-scratching move

It's a shock, to say the least.

Since the official report of Malik Nabers’ torn ACL, it’s been speculation city as to what the New York Giants will plan on doing with such a massive vacancy. There have been blockbuster trade thought experiments, feel-good reunion efforts, and even practice squad poaching ideas. Suffice it to say, ideas are all over the map. We’re officially at “throw anything at the wall and see what sticks” mode.

And apparently, fans, insiders, and journalists aren’t the only ones engaging — if Big Blue’s latest move is any indication, they’re just as lost as all of us on how to replace the 22-year-old record-setting receiver.

In one of the more head-scratching moves, the G-Men are working out veteran free agent wide receiver Samori Toure on Friday, as reported by Pat Leonard. Because... why not, I guess? Talk about turning over every stone. Leonard explains that when injuries like this happen, it’s common for the team to work out a group of players, so it’s likely the 27-year-old will be joined by a couple of other (random) faces the Giants will evaluate on Friday.

Giants open WR replacement search with head-scratching Samori Toure workout

If you haven’t heard Toure’s name before, it wouldn’t be all that surprising. The Green Bay Packers selected him in the seventh round of the 2022 Draft, and he’s all but been a ghost ever since.

He has two seasons of action under his belt (2022–23), totaling 13 receptions for 160 yards and a touchdown. While those numbers might look like a Nabers highlight reel Sunday, that’s over the course of 22 games for the former Nebraska Cornhusker. Tough to believe this is the guy in charge of filling the Nabers void.

Most recently, he spent all of 2024 on the Chicago Bears’ practice squad. That's not exactly encouraging.

Listen, not one player is going to come in and fill Leek’s shoes. It was always going to take a village. However, Toure would be a tough sell to a fanbase still riding high off its first win of the season. Just how did we get from losing Leek to... Toure (no offense).

Lil’Jordan Humphrey could get called up from the Giants’ practice squad. They could look at Isaiah Hodgins on the Steelers’ practice squad as well. Unfortunately, outside of swinging a trade for a top wideout, it’s slim pickings.

Regardless, general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll will have to add talent to this roster, especially to help out their rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart, push the ball downfield and take pressure off the running game. With a winless New Orleans Saints team up next in Week 5, there’s no time like the present to get on a bit of a heater.

Unfortunately, Toure's track record has already proved he just won’t move the needle.
