Giants make serious move with rising draft prospect (and it's not nothing)

The New York Giants have kept their quarterback options open all offseason, and now they’re doubling down on that strategy. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Louisville QB Tyler Shough is in East Rutherford on Wednesday for a Top 30 visit—and it’s not out of nowhere.

General manager Joe Schoen and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka were both front and center at Louisville’s Pro Day earlier in the pre-draft process to get eyes on the 25-year-old passer.

Shough isn’t in the same tier as Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders, but he’s quietly become one of the more intriguing Day 2 options in this class. He’s 6-foot-5 with a live arm and real athleticism. And given how hard the Giants have scouted him, it’s worth wondering if they see a developmental QB here worth grooming—especially if they pass on one at No. 3 overall.

Giants are doing their homework on Louisville QB Tyler Shough

The idea of the G-Men drafting Tyler Shough would’ve sounded ridiculous and oddly reasonable a couple of months ago—depending on who you ask.

On one hand, fans would’ve been screaming for Sanders or Ward, ready to storm the facility if Joe Schoen dared take Shough over one of the blue-chip names. On the other hand, once you get past the glitz and start looking at fit, value, and upside, Shough actually makes some sense.

Shough’s path isn’t conventional. He’s 25, has dealt with injuries, and took the long road through Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville. But he’s battle-tested, smart, and reportedly crushed his meetings during Senior Bowl week. That stuff matters, especially to a front office that clearly values leadership and pro-readiness at the quarterback spot.

He threw for 3,195 yards with 23 touchdowns last season and has shown he can operate in both spread and pro-style concepts. Is he a top-10 guy? No. He's a Day 2 guy most likely. But can he come in, sit behind Russ and Jameis, and develop into something down the line? That might be the play.

This doesn’t mean the Giants are out on Sanders. It just means they’re smart enough to keep the door open for other options. If the board doesn’t fall the way they want it to at No. 3, there could be a scenario where Shough walks into the building with way less fanfare… and more long-term potential than people realize.

The more visits he racks up, the clearer it becomes: teams are interested. And New York might be more serious than they're letting on.
