Giants might have just tipped their hand at QB (but it’s not what you think)

Shough and tell.

It’s been a whirlwind offseason for the New York Giants, especially at quarterback. After finally purging last year's quarterback room, the front office added Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson to the mix in quick succession. It’s not a long-term fix by any means, but it’s enough to stop the bleeding for now and get some juice back in the building.

They also might have forced Aaron Rodgers into retirement... but we digress. It's been a time.

With the No. 3 overall pick in their back pocket, the assumption has been that Big Blue would still be in the mix for one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft—Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders. But what if they miss out on both before they're up? What if they go in a different direction altogether?

That might’ve been the message sent this week when the Giants pulled up with the crew and showed up in full force at Louisville’s Pro Day to scout rising quarterback prospect Tyler Shough.

Tyler Shough could be making a push up the Giants’ radar

Per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, general manager Joe Schoen, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, and other team officials were on hand to watch Shough throw. It’s notable. The 25-year-old isn’t one of the marquee names in this class, but he’s gained serious momentum in draft circles over the last month thanks to a strong season at Louisville and a solid showing during Senior Bowl week.

He’s older than most prospects. He’s battled through injuries. But he also has prototypical size (6-foot-5), a live arm, and experience in both spread and pro-style systems.

In 2024, he threw for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns while completing 62.7% of his passes. According to multiple reports, the Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, Seattle Seahawks, and Pittsburgh Steelers have all hosted or shown interest in Shough, with some believing he could sneak into the top half of Day 2.

For a Giants team that could pivot to a player like Travis Hunter or trade back altogether, landing Shough in the second (reach) or third round would give them a developmental option with real upside without having to burn the third overall pick.

This may not be a massive shift in strategy just yet, but attending Shough’s Pro Day with top brass in tow sends a message: the Giants are keeping their options wide open. And if the board breaks a certain way in April, Shough could end up being a bigger part of the plan than anyone expected.
