The New York Giants haven't slowed down on trying to make some additions to their 2026 roster, agreeing to terms with veteran defensive tackle DJ Reader. The Giants, who have some very winnable games on the ledger in the early stages of the 2026 NFL season, may remain an active team as they try to look for veteran role players.

While wide receiver may not have been a big need for the team after the draft, more concerning updates surrounding former top pick Malik Nabers have many wondering if the Giants would be wise to rely on him being fully healthy for the remainder of the season. It wouldn't be the worst idea in the world if the Giants targeted a free agent, especially one like Deebo Samuel.

Samuel's star has lost some luster over the last two years after his trade to the Washington Commanders failed to produce the same results he had with the San Francisco 49ers. Even as he gets a bit long in the tooth comparitively, the Giants might be one of the few teams who could put him in a very advantageous role in the 2026 season.

Giants need to consider Deebo Samuel signing to start off hot in 2026 season

Samuel caught 72 passes last season, but he failed to top 800 yards due to a limited route tree. Samuel only ran for 75 yards, which is a sharp inversion from his time in San Francisco where he was essentially the team's backup running back. His days as an elite playmaker are over.

However, Samuel might find some new life in Matt Nagy's offense. Nagy has placed an emphasis (almost to a fault sometimes) on getting receivers the ball in space and letting them make plays in space, and that could be exactly what Samuel needs to jump-start his career.

The term "developmental wide receiver" rarely gets thrown around, but that might be what Malachi Fields is at this point in time due to his lack of great speed. Samuel, Nabers, and Darius Slayton would form quite a combination alongside tight end Isaiah Likely for a young quarterback like Dart.

Samuel will sign somewhere before the season starts, and it might be beneficial to the Giants to get out in front of this and offer him an enticing contract before a contender in need of a pass catcher decides to snatch him up before John Harbaugh can.
