Giants might need Greg Newsome II much sooner than anyone expected

Dru Phillips’ setback could allow veteran Greg Newsome II to be the Giants’ Day 1 starter.

We’re getting closer to Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, and soon we’ll have a clearer picture of John Harbaugh’s first version of the New York Giants roster.

There are still several questions about Big Blue's roster construction, like what the offensive line depth will look like behind their starters, which wide receivers will make the 53-man roster, and what New York’s defensive tackles will look like with several players competing for backup roles. However, one of the biggest positional battles still lies at cornerback.

The G-Men have about five players competing for opportunities at defensive back. Still, one significant injury may have just made their decision a little bit easier as Week 1 nears.

Greg Newsome II could play a big role for the Giants defense in 2026

Both veterans Greg Newsome II and Dru Phillips have dealt with knee injuries this summer at training camp, which could alter what the Giants' defensive backfield looks like when they face the Cowboys in Week 1.

Newsome II has been limited and working off to the side in several recent practices, so it appears his injury is not concerning. Still, it’s definitely something to keep an eye on in a competitive battle for reps at cornerback this training camp.

The injury fans are most worried about is Phillips, who for the last two seasons has served as the team’s primary slot corner and is dealing with a mild right knee sprain that he suffered last week.

He did miss a few practices and exited last Wednesday’s practice, where Ar’Darius Washington replaced him and received first-team reps, but has recently been working off to the side with trainers, which is a good sign. Still, his status for the preseason opener Saturday against the Minnesota Vikings remains uncertain, and that uncertainty makes the cornerback battle even more important.

Newsome II joined the team this offseason, signing a one-year deal, after being traded from the Browns to the Jaguars last season. The 2021 first-round pick totaled 52 tackles, nine passes defended, and an interception in 17 games played last season between Cleveland and Jacksonville.

The expectation is that the 26-year-old will be able to contribute immediately for Big Blue alongside Paulson Adebo if Phillips’ injury is more concerning than expected, Deonte Banks continues to struggle, or rookie Colton Hood is not ready by the start of the season. That possibility makes the competition at cornerback even more significant.

It’s also worth noting that the G-Men brought in Terrion Arnold for a workout on Wednesday, and according to New York Daily News’ Pat Leonard, signing the 23-year-old is “clearly on the table.”

Still, just know that if Phillips is not ready to go by Week 1, the Giants will be in good hands with either Newsome II or Arnold stepping right into his place, which would soften the impact of Phillips’ absence.
