The New York Giants might employ Addison Lynch and Donald D’Alesio as their defensive backs coach and defensive pass-game coordinator, respectively, but they might want to consider adding a third coach to the staff once superstar wide receiver Davante Adams hangs up his cleats.
After Monday night’s 28-6 disaster against the Los Angeles Rams, Adams spoke with reporters about one of the two touchdowns he scored against the G-Men, giving a response that was so casually educational, Lynch and D’Alesio should probably use it to coach up New York’s defensive backs:
"I saw they were trying to double, so I was wondering what was going on with the leverage. As soon as the ball was snapped, he didn't have the correct leverage, so it was basically just about us connecting, and we've done that quite a few times on that route in particular. That's part of the details.
They did double-team it and just tried to hide it a little too much. If you're going to double, you better get over there, because we're going."
Davante Adams basically gave Giants secondary a free coverage lesson
Adams had a ridiculous game against the G-Men, catching eight passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. With his superstar running mate, Puka Nacua, ruled out with a hip injury, it didn't take a detective to figure out who Matthew Stafford would be looking for.
As it turns out, even knowing a healthy dose of Adams was coming didn’t help much. Stafford diced up Big Blue’s secondary for 327 yards and four touchdowns, with Jevón Holland’s interception providing one of the few bright spots from an otherwise miserable night.
Pro Football Focus confirmed it was a disastrous night for New York's secondary. Rookie Colton Hood earned a 40.9 overall grade and an Adams-led 28.8 coverage grade after allowing five catches on six targets for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Stafford had a 155.6 passer rating when targeting him.
Greg Newsome II earned a 51.9 overall grade, with a meager 50.0 coverage grade, allowing three catches on four targets for 51 yards.
It obviously didn’t help that the Giants were playing without Deonte Banks and Paulson Adebo. Not having a starting corner and the team's top backup before facing the explosive passing attack of the Horns was always asking for trouble.
But it's still a tough pill to swallow when he literally knew the Giants weren't going to stop him as soon as the ball was hiked. That's objectively so cool. Wouldn't it be nice for Big Blue to get there with their QB and WR?
Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson should have that clip ready for the DB group this week. It’s about as straightforward a teachable moment as it's going to get. At this point, New York’s corners could use all the free Davante Adams coaching they can get.
