Giants’ mounting Stefon Diggs buzz just hit an uncomfortable reality

Not Digging the vibes.

Every time a big-name player gets cut, you can almost guarantee the New York Giants will be tabbed as their next “perfect destination.” That comes with the territory of being a team with more holes than the plot of The Dark Knight Rises.

So it wasn’t exactly a surprise when the New England Patriots cut wide receiver Stefon Diggs that the New York Giants were mentioned in the next breath as an ideal landing spot. The logic was about as straightforward as it gets: Malik Nabers can’t throw and catch the ball. He needs some help. Oh, so does franchise quarterback Jaxson Dart.

But general manager Joe Schoen might want to think twice about officially entering the “can you Diggs it” sweepstakes. Giants fans don’t seem very interested... like, at all. Like, they couldn't be more out if they tried. In our social media poll, the response was loud and clear: 194 votes against bringing him in, compared to just 29 in favor of signing the 32-year-old:

It’s been a while since I was a senior accountant, but you don’t need a finance degree to see that’s pretty damning.

Giants fans aren’t Digging the idea of signing Stefon Diggs in free agency

It’s not every day 87 percent of people agree on anything, but when they do, it makes you step back and think. The four-time Pro Bowler is coming off his seventh 1,000-yard season in an 11-year career, just a year removed from tearing his ACL with the Houston Texans. So, what gives?

Well, for one, he’s dealing with a legal issue that may or may not have played a role in the Patriots cutting ties. There are also some on-field and locker room concerns mixed in.

There’s a reason the Super Bowl runner-ups, who already had plenty of cap space, chose to move on. The playoffs exposed Diggs as an older, less impactful receiver than the one people remember from his Minnesota Vikings days. And that happens. Father Time is undefeated. Dart needs a receiver he can grow with, not one the team has to prop up while they enter the twilight years of their career.

And if Diggs doesn’t get the targets he tends to command, there’s a good chance everyone hears about it. He’s never exactly been shy about voicing frustration. Malik Nabers has already made it clear he’s the alpha moving forward, so bringing in someone who could challenge that dynamic doesn’t feel like the best fit.

Diggs’ history of airing frustrations publicly when the ball isn’t coming his way could create unnecessary tension in a locker room that’s still trying to find its footing.

The Giants need another receiver. That part isn’t up for debate. The question is who.

If the fan poll is any indication, Stefon Diggs isn’t the name Big Blue supporters want Schoen chasing once free agency opens.
