New York Giants fans can simultaneously be excited about the return the club received for disgruntled star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and upset about his departure. Those two feelings aren't mutually exclusive.
But what's done is done. Lawrence is now a member of the Cincinnati Bengals and took a parting shot at the Giants on his way out for good measure. New York did quite well to acquire the No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft for him, thanks to a desperate trade partner.
Many were initially taken aback by the Giants landing a second top-10 first-round selection in the blockbuster swap that sent Lawrence to the Bengals. It's an exorbitant price to pay for a player who's coming off the worst campaign of his career and eyeing a massive raise (which he got). However, the overarching "subplot" that is superstar quarterback Joe Burrow's long-term outlook in Cincinnati reportedly helped New York fetch a haul, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Giants capitalized on Bengals' desperation to satisfy QB Joe Burrow in blockbuster Dexter Lawrence trade
How the Bengals fare this upcoming season is "hugely significant" for Burrow's future, according to Schefter. Lawrence is a two-time All-Pro and squarely in his prime (turns 29 in November). Put two and two together, and Cincy was willing to overpay to appease their organizational centerpiece, which allowed the Giants to secure a premium asset.
There has been speculation as to whether Burrow is "better off" taking his talents elsewhere if Cincinnati can't right the ship sooner rather than later. Wind that in mind, the team is under pressure to give "[him] and the franchise the best chance to win now," as Schefter explained. Conversely, the Giants struck while the iron was hot by rerouting Lawrence to the Bengals.
The Giants preferred to hang onto Lawrence unless someone blew them away with an offer. They got a golden opportunity to maximize compensation, courtesy of Cincy's pressing efforts to keep Burrow happy. Giving in to New York's lofty demands highlights the Bengals' sense of urgency.
Suddenly, the Giants are equipped to bring in two potential building blocks for new head coach John Harbaugh. They can go a variety of ways near the top of the board, or even move back and continue to stockpile ammo after shipping Lawrence out. The options are endless.
