In an era when even historic teams like the New York Giants seemingly have too many uniform sets, what’s frustrating is the jerseys and helmets that get left out of the yearly rotation.
Beggars can’t be choosers, we know, and make no mistake: we’re immensely grateful that teams have retired the mid-2010s Color Rush uniforms. The less said about some of those abominations, the better. Nothing said “modern NFL” more than a November primetime game between two last-place teams in ghastly fits.
The Giants announced their 2026 uniform schedule on Wednesday, and there weren’t many surprises. Jaxson Dart and teammates will wear the “Legacy” uniforms in Week 4 and Week 13 against the Cardinals and 49ers, respectively. They’ll also rock their "Vintage White" set against the Eagles and Commanders in Weeks 9 and 10 — and not to be outdone, Jalen Hurts and the Eagles will don their Kelly Green uniforms.
All of those are fine, and we especially like the “Legacy” uniforms. Eventually, though, we’d like to see the Giants bring back their mid-2000s red jerseys.
Remembering the New York Giants’ rarely-used red alternate jerseys
The Giants typically wore red or blue jerseys for much of their early history, though they phased out the former in the 1950s. That changed in 2004, when they introduced an alternate red jersey for a midseason clash with the Eagles.
Over the next three years, the Giants wore those jerseys against the Cowboys. For whatever reason, the set didn’t return in 2008, and it was quietly retired ahead of the 2009 season. They didn’t entirely go away, though, as EA Sports kept them in the “Madden” games for several more editions.
Considering that the Giants only donned those uniforms four times, they’re definitely forgettable. Unless you were in the stadium, why would you recall the jersey that Eli Manning wore for a random November 2007 game against the Cowboys? The only Giants-Cowboys clash worth remembering from that season came two months later.
The Giants have always adhered to a simple uniform mindset, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Problems only arise when the league mandates you have an alternate set, as Yankees fans saw (pun not intended) firsthand with the infamous Players’ Weekend jerseys in the 2010s. Did you know that the only time Derek Jeter wore a jersey with his name on his back was during the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic events?
Thankfully, the Giants have elected not to introduce any radically dreadful uniforms, and we selfishly hope things stay that way. But with next season marking the 20th anniversary of the 2007 Super Bowl team, why not properly go down memory lane and bring back the red jerseys for one Sunday?
We’ll take anything so long as it’s not the Jaguars’ mustard Color Rush uniforms, assuming that some still haven’t been burned and sent to the ocean.
