Moving from the outside to the inside of the offensive line is a psychological thrill ride -- I'd imagine... never done it myself. But look no further than Evan Neal.
The New York Giants are banking on Francis "Sisi" Mauigoa having a much smoother transition as he makes the change from playing tackle at Miami to guard for the G-Men. Big Blue selected the former Hurricane with the 10th overall pick in the 2026 Draft after trading Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The universe, in all its infinite wisdom, handed Mauigoa a brutal welcome-to-the-NFL gauntlet right out of the gate. Week 1 brings Dallas and Quinnen Williams. If and when he gets through that, Week 2 isn’t much better with Braden Fiske and Kobi Turner collapsing the pocket for the LA Rams on the road. And to cap off the opening trilogy, the Titans roll into town in Week 3 with All-Pro lineman Jeffery Simmons waiting to feast.
This opening stretch is a total nightmare for a rookie trying to figure out a new position. Sisi definitely has the functional strength and mean streak to become a cornerstone on the offensive line down the road. But anyone expecting him to breeze through this three-week buzzsaw without struggling (at least a little bit) is lying to themselves.
Giants fans just need to get ready for some ugly early reps while the 20-year-old gets his feet under him.
Giants are throwing Francis Mauigoa into the deep end right away
General Manager Joe Schoen is clearly gambling that Mauigoa’s 330-pound frame and raw power can mask his lateral movement limitations. But sending guys in college through the earth is a universe away from taking on the NFL's elite.
Week 1 is an immediate "welcome to the NFL moment." Williams is going to test Sisi’s mental makeup from the very first snap. The four-time Pro Bowler is one of the best interior linemen in the league. It's a tough first go.
If Mauigoa struggles to adapt to his new role immediately, he’s going to get pushed straight back into Jaxson Dart's lap. Then it's on to Week 2, where Braden Fiske and Kobi Turner just don't stop applying pressure. They thrive in the chaos. If Mauigoa and center John Michael Schmitz aren't completely in sync passing off assignments, it’s going to turn into a complete horror movie, with an easy win for the Horns.
And just when the rook thinks he can breathe, Tennessee rolls into town for Week 3 to let Simmons introduce himself. The 6-foot-4, 305-pounder is an apex predator on the inside who plays with a level of pure, unadulterated violence that can ruin an offensive lineman's week... month... year.
Mauigoa can’t just lean on his own enormous size here. He’s going to have to read leverage and adjust on the fly against one of the best interior linemen in the league. John Harbaugh needs to do everything he can to protect his star rookie and to make sure his early struggles don't fester. Sisi has the ceiling to be a cornerstone for the next decade-plus, but he’s about to get a real trial by fire early.
If anything, it's the perfect opportunity to prove he's ready to actually "die" for Dart -- actions speak louder than words.
