Russell Wilson might've ‘peeled' back the curtain on life after the NFL

Get that (banana) bread however you can.

Russell Wilson’s tenure as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants didn’t last very long. After going winless in his first three games, the 37-year-old was benched for rookie sensation Jaxson Dart. Russ wouldn’t see another start in Giants blue again.

And there’s a growing belief he’ll never take another snap under center in the NFL again, either.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean his playing career is over. It might just mean he has to switch sports. The football world might be done with the 10-time Pro Bowler, but his baseball -- er, Banana Ball career might just be taking off. While all eyes were glued to the fallout from draft weekend, Mr. Unlimited made a guest appearance with the Savannah Bananas on Sunday for their matchup against the Party Animals at Yankee Stadium.

Russ saw some action in the batter’s box, stepping up to the plate in the fifth inning. With one strike on the count, Wilson made contact with the ball -- an infield hopper. He sprinted down the line, but was thrown out at first:

Talk about an out-of-nowhere, potassium-filled appearance. It's unclear if Big Blue would get a Banana Ball compensatory pick or edible arrangement if he ends up signing with the fruit, but we could find out soon.

Russ had a legitimate shot at baseball before the NFL took over. He was drafted twice, by the Orioles and Rockies, and spent two seasons in the minors as a second baseman, playing 93 games.

At NC State, he hit .282 and even logged some innings on the mound. The Yankees acquired his rights in 2018 and brought him into spring training, where he even got an at-bat against three-time All-Star Max Fried.

His baseball abilities might not be as ripe as they once were, but there’s still clearly some baseball talent left in him. However, as fate would have it, the Bananas would go on to lose the game 7-2, making Wilson winless once again. That follows a 2025 season where he threw for 831 yards and three touchdowns with the G-Men.

The guy can’t buy a win — not with the Giants, not with the Bananas. At least not on the field.

Off of it, he seems to be doing just fine. Whether it’s Banana Ball or providing pre-game analysis for CBS Sports on Sundays, the potential Hall of Fame quarterback will be split on options for what comes next.

However his retirement plans play out, he’s got more than one path... some just have a little more a-peel than others.
