Giants still hit with harsh reality check despite free agency spending

They still need more.

Another offseason, another round of kicking the New York Giants while they’re down. This time, it’s Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton handing out the brutal reality check for the G-Men, listing Big Blue as having the fourth-worst roster in the NFL heading into 2025.

Not exactly the energy and ringing endorsement fans were hoping for after a flurry of free-agent spending.

Now, to be fair, the Giants have been active. They brought in veteran quarterback Jameis Winston, shelled out big money for safety Jevon Holland and corner Paulson Adebo, and even added to the defensive interior and offensive tackle spots with depth pieces. So, it’s not like general manager Joe Schoen has been asleep at the wheel. But if you squint past the headline… there’s still a ton of work to be done to get this team competitive.

Even though Schoen made a bunch of moves, quarterback is still the massive question mark. The offensive line is still a mess, especially the interior and at tackle. And while Malik Nabers looks like a future All-Pro, the rest of the wide receiver room is really a collection of WR3s. Darius Slayton’s return is nice — but it's safe to say we know what he is and what he isn't at this point of his career.

The Giants still have a long way to go to be competitive

Moton didn’t mince words when evaluating the state of the Giants:

"The Giants saw immediate returns from wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. in their first year as pros, but they will go only so far with one of the league’s worst quarterback situations."

He also pointed out the positives on defense:

"Early in free agency, New York added two defensive starters in safety Jevon Holland and cornerback Paulson Adebo. Defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris can also carve out a decent role playing at least 60 percent of the snaps. Those moves gave the club a decent boost in the rankings."

The problem is, those boosts still landed us in the bottom five.

The Giants' secondary is suddenly looking feisty. Holland is a legitimate difference-maker and Adebo (assuming he’s healthy) brings a ball-hawking mentality. But defense can only carry you so far if your offense can't move the ball down the field and score.

Winston is a decent short-term flyer, but he’s obviously not the guy. He’s the bridge. And while he’s got a big arm and just enough chaos to make things entertaining, he also finished 2024 with 12 interceptions in just seven starts. That’s vintage Winston.

Schoen has to crush the draft — especially with their No. 3 pick. Because until the Giants get their quarterback situation right and plug the gaping holes in the O-line, they're not competing for anything except maybe another top-five pick in next year’s draft.
