Several changes have been made by the New York Giants this offseason, with a focus on building for the future. This includes the quarterback room, which now consists of Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Jaxson Dart, as well as the defensive side of the ball, with the addition of Abdul Carter.

One of the other significant changes is the Giants' backfield, which consists of Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary, Eric Gray, and rookie Cam Skattebo, who was taken by the team in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Skattebo was a promising prospect with plenty to be excited about during his time at Arizona State. Last season with the Sun Devils, Skattebo amassed 1,711 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns, in addition to 605 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns, earning First-Team All-Big 12 honors and First-Team All-American honors.

It's the perfect time for Skattebo to join this ascending offense consisting of wide receiver Malik Nabers and tight end Theo Johnson, who highlighted last year's Giants rookie class and are proving to be long-term answers for the offense.

Another player who proved to be a success in his rookie campaign was Tyrone Tracy Jr., who took over as the team's lead back in Week 5 after veteran Devin Singletary suffered an injury. The 2024 fifth-round pick rushed for 839 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns to go with 38 receptions for 284 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.

Tracy Jr. will be the Giants' RB1 entering 2025, but now, with Skattebo in town for OTAs and training camp coming up this summer, there may be more competition than we realize for the starting job.

Cam Skattebo could be the Giants' starting running back by October

Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com and USA Today recently joined Beyond the Beat, presented by 32BeatWriters, where he discussed what we can expect with the offseason changes that were made.

Art mentions that Singletary has his relationship with head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen from their time together with the Buffalo Bills; however, talent will eventually take over in the Giants' backfield, leading to Skattebo getting more opportunities given how much the team has committed.

He added he believed the team would add a compliment to Tracy Jr., but with Skattebo, you could look at it from the other way around, and the rookie could lead the Giants' backfield.

As of now, Tracy Jr. and Skattebo are on the same playing field; however, Stapleton mentions that given all the attention Skattebo has already received since he was drafted, along with what he has seen out of the Giants' rookie minicamp as a runner and receiver out of the backfield, it would not surprise him to see the rookie take on RB1 duties.

If both Tracy Jr. and Skattebo prove they have what it takes to be the Giants' starter, New York's backfield could resemble the Lions', where they have a 1A-1B situation with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
