The New York Giants seemingly weren't leaving the 2026 NFL Draft without Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields. They made an aggressive trade up to select him in the third round at No. 74 overall — in a way that's impossible to ignore.

You don't package three mid-round picks to climb 31 spots without a plan. New York clearly had their sights on Fields and was willing to go to great lengths to get him. The question now becomes where he lands in the pecking order.

Of course, a healthy Malik Nabers is firmly entrenched atop the Giants' receiver depth chart until further notice. Darius Slayton gets paid too much money to be anything less than their second option and is the longest-tenured player on the roster (seniority matters). However, the club's significant investment in Fields suggests he will be the No. 3 guy of a suddenly crowded room.

New York boasts a much deeper group of wideouts now than it did this past year. They became incredibly reliant on Wan'Dale Robinson, who's now a member of the Tennessee Titans, en route to his first career 1,000-yard campaign. Giants general manager Joe Schoen and the front office have ostensibly learned the hard way that they needed to reinforce the position.

Of course, Nabers' availability is a vital caveat. The star playmaker tore his right ACL and meniscus last September and underwent surgery in October. He's eyeing a return to action "closer to the [upcoming] season," according to Giants head coach John Harbaugh (h/t FOX Sports' Ralph Vacchiano).

There will be plenty of opportunities up for grabs in the Giants' passing attack if Nabers isn't ready for Week 1. His whopping 24.4 percent target share in 2025, which includes the game he was carted off the field in the second quarter, looms large. Without him, Fields figures to be among the biggest beneficiaries, at least from a usage standpoint.

Meanwhile, an intriguing trio of veterans is lurking behind Fields. Offseason free-agent signings Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III give the Giants a much-needed injection of speed and explosiveness on the outside. Isaiah Hodgins presents franchise quarterback Jaxson Dart with another big-bodied weapon.
