Going from six seasons of Daniel Jones to Russell Wilson is like trading in your Honda Civic for a Maserati, and that’s a difference the New York Giants immediately felt. Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are fighting for their jobs, and they put the biggest emphasis on improving the quarterback room this offseason.
And the addition of the Super Bowl champion has paid off. The 36-year-old has been quick to build rapport with Big Blue’s young, explosive receiver group. And when addressing the media on Monday evening, veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton gave his new QB1 an interesting compliment after praising the signing in March.
"He's disgustingly consistent,” Slayton told SNY. “He's so consistent, it's almost nasty. It's like, how is this possible?"
Darius Slayton praises Russell Wilson's consistency in exciting development
Consistency has been the missing ingredient for the Giants’ offense. Even this deep into his career, Wilson possesses one of the best deep balls in football, that should help unlock this group of weapons in ways that Jones or Tommy DeVito never could.
His 80-yard bomb to Beaux Collins in the preseason was a reminder that New York finally has a vertical element again—and that’s exactly what Daboll and Mike Kafka were hoping his signing would provide. The early signs have been encouraging, but now all of the buzz has shifted towards Week 1.
The Super Bowl champion has a reputation for being one of the most positive people in the NFL—and one of the best teammates, and Slayton confirmed that his behavior isn’t an act.
“I feel there's a lot of people that just have a good day on camera and that's kind of the perception we all walk away from them with, but at some point, every day at 7:00 am, there's somebody smiling telling you, 'Good morning,' it's like you're just wired this way.”
He also called the 10-time Pro Bowler “just a consistent human being”—a quality the G-Men have not really seen under center since Eli Manning retired.
The Auburn product caught 39 passes for 573 yards and just two touchdowns in 2024, but expect those numbers to increase in 2025. Slayton, Wan’Dafle Robinson, and Jalin Hyatt should all expect their numbers to climb in 2025 amid more stability under center.
Wilson has thrown for over 46,000 yards in his career and has 350 passing touchdowns, that pedigree of experience is invaluable as a bridge starter until Jaxson Dart is ready to take over. And he's been vocal in his praise of Malik Nabers.
As long as that consistency translates to success on Sundays, Daboll and Schoen’s gamble will provide the reset this franchise has been searching for.
