NFL writer has contender making Russell Wilson mistake Giants fans know all too well

Big Blue Nation can't help but wonder why anyone would succumb to "letting Russ cook" in 2026.

By now, we know what Russell Wilson is at this diminished stage of what's been a remarkable NFL career. He's been on his last legs for ages, yet teams keep falling into the same trap of signing him, like the New York Giants.

The Giants learned the hard way that nothing good comes from trying to squeeze whatever juice is left, if any, out of Wilson. Before them, it was the Pittsburgh Steelers, who stirred up internal controversy with their oddly stout commitment to him, and the Denver Broncos. Next in line could be the Kansas City Chiefs, albeit at their peril.

Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox listed the Chiefs as Wilson's "best landing spot," but are we sure about that? Big Blue Nation will be the first to tell you this is the wrong wagon to hitch to.

Giants fans can't help but scoff at NFL writer's Russell Wilson-Chiefs suggestion

Wilson believes he still has gas left in the tank and wants an opportunity to prove it in 2026. Conversely, rumbles of his post-playing media ventures only grew louder down the stretch of disastrous campaign with the Giants. Knox splits the difference, identifying the 10-time Pro Bowler as a viable "bridge option" for the Chiefs.

Chiefs superstar signal-caller Patrick Mahomes has his sights set on returning from ACL and LCL tears for Week 1 of next season. That may be more optimistic than realistic, considering he underwent surgery in mid-December. Moreover, his backup, Gardner Minshew, also suffered a torn ACL and is slated for unrestricted free agency in March.

Kansas City's situation at least puts Wilson, who's hitting the open market this offseason, on their radar. They need a potential stopgap in case Mahomes isn't ready for the start of this upcoming year. Nevertheless, Giants fans can't help but think there has to be a better alternative.

Among 57 quarterbacks with at least 50 dropbacks in 2025, Wilson ranked 54th in both accurate and catchable throw rate (48.7 and 67.2 percent, respectively). His arm isn't as lively as it once was, and the numbers bear that out. Meanwhile, he no longer has the mobility to counteract the diminishing efforts as a passer.

Of all clubs, the Chiefs should be well aware of Wilson's decline, considering they made him look silly in primetime this season. He completed 18 of 32 attempts for 160 scoreless yards and two interceptions in what went down as his final start with the Giants.
