It has been an incredible week or so for the New York Giants. Offseason Team Activities have come and gone, and there was a gracious reunion with one of the franchise's most polarizing wide receivers.
Odell Beckham Jr. is a part of Big Blue once again, and it seems like this is the perfect time for his return. Of course, the main question has been, since he has already been around the block once before with this franchise, will he be grandfathered in?
OBJ is embracing the challenge of earning a roster spot
The answer to that question was answered on the very first day. Dan Duggan of The Athletic outlined what transpired between OBJ and head coach John Harbaugh as they were discussing his comeback. Both sides know exactly what has to happen now.
Harbaugh wanted Beckham Jr. to come back and embrace the new culture of the Giants locker room, but he also made it clear that a spot on the 53-man roster would not be guaranteed.
OBJ acknowledged that and said, "I’m like, ‘Listen, I’m going out on my sword either way it goes.’”
The 33-year-old has not played a down of football since Week 14 of the 2024 season, in which he was with the Miami Dolphins. He did not play a single down last season, in which he was serving a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. It has been a while since he has seen the field.
The Giants have a blossoming wide receiver room already, but Beckham Jr. adds another layer, and it is completely different than anyone else. He might not have the young legs like he used to, but his experience will carry him further than most.
He was drafted to this franchise; he was there for the last bits of the highs, and the start of the recent abysmal lows. Beckham Jr. was molded by the pressure of the New York media and its die-hard fan base. These other newcomers, like Darnell Mooney and recently drafted wideout Malachi Fields are going to be in for a rude awakening if they don't perform.
Beckham Jr.‘s value isn’t limited to what he can do on Sundays. His experience playing with Eli Manning, Lamar Jackson, and Matt Stafford gives him another way to contribute as he fights for a spot on the roster.
The former LSU standout is a viable option for being a direct aide for quarterback Jaxson Dart. He was with the greatest thrower in this franchise’s history in Eli Manning, played with a generational talent in Baltimore in Lamar Jackson, and won a Super Bowl with a future Hall of Famer in Matt Stafford.
There's a lot there for him to spill to No. 6 to help ensure this next season is not a sophomore slump.
It's amazing to see OBJ back with the "NY" logo on his helmet, and the fans from those days of kicking field-goal nets and helping organize "The Boat Photo" are reminiscing about the good and bad.
It might not take another moment like “The Catch” for Beckham Jr. to secure a spot, but there are plenty of other ways he can help this team.
