Giants’ biggest 2026 nightmare scenario rests on Jaxson Dart’s shoulders

The New York Giants have a lot of hope for the 2026 season. There are a lot of new additions, both on the field and on the sideline. But one thing will be the same: the quarterback who inspired John Harbaugh to come to New York will be lining up under center.

There is some area for concern, as the second year is often labeled as a “sophomore slump.” Jaxson Dart could become another victim in a long line of players who struggle in their second go-around in the NFL.

Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon has that exact scenario playing out in his one sentence describing every NFL team's potential nightmare scenario in 2026, writing:

"More tape on Jaxson Dart leads to a sophomore slump for the 2025 first-round pick, leaving the Giants in a tough spot following a fourth consecutive non-playoff season."

Giants roster upgrades should help Jaxson Dart avoid sophomore slump

The Giants went out and secured a bunch of new players this offseason, so Dart can't possibly fail. Isaiah Likely, Darnell Mooney, Malachi Fields, and Francis Mauigoa are the tip of the iceberg for the 2026 season.

Not to mention, Dart will be getting back two fan favorites who are poised to have big seasons. Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo should be healthy enough for training camp, and you can bet that Dart is going to get some reps in as soon as possible.

For next season, one of the biggest things that could cause a complete and total failure would be Dart suffering a slump. If he cannot at the very least replicate what he did in 2025, this team is going to be dead in the water, and none of these new pieces are going to be able to save it.

Dart has a really high set of expectations, and that was before Harbaugh came in and declared a quick turnaround. The Giants have not looked or felt this good in a long time, and Dart is the catalyst of it all.

Some examples of former Giants who have endured this known curse include Saquon Barkley. Back in 2019, he really struggled following his breakout rookie campaign with the G-Men. It lasted until he left the Giants, and we all remember what he did with his new team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

For Dart, a sophomore slump would look like an injury early in the season, a completely busted stat line that includes a lot of turnovers, or crumbling under the pressure and allowing backup Jameis Winston to steal the spotlight.

When the 2026 season rolls around, all eyes will be on No. 6. This is the year that will show whether Dart can handle the pressure and take this team where it believes it can go.
