The New York Giants are getting closer to being in game shape, as training camp continues to move along nicely. There are position battles everywhere, a new offense to learn, and some interesting storylines to keep an eye on once preseason play begins.
One of those position battles involves wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who is currently competing for the last available spot in the group. It seems to have come down to No. 3, pitted against Braxton Berrios and Dalen Cambre for the last spot, and all three have had a fantastic camp thus far.
ESPN's Jordan Rannan has been reporting that Beckham Jr. has been getting better as camp has gone on, and that included time with starting quarterback Jaxson Dart.
OBJ is giving the Giants every reason to keep him around
Both Berrios and Cambre have certainly earned the right to fight for the last spot, but there is something about having OBJ back on this squad that just seems like the right move. The 33-year-old wideout has looked like he turned back the clock, and in some instances, is winning against Father Time.
Beckham Jr. only has so much time left to play this game, and for him to lose out now would almost put the final nail in the coffin of his storied career. But that is if head coach John Harbaugh decides to go with one of the other two.
Dart is going to need some more veterans in that WR room, and the idea of coupling Malik Nabers with Beckham Jr. is a slam dunk. There is no reason why No. 3 should not be getting the final spot, as he has fought his way back from an untimely mock retirement. If there was ever a time for him to return to the Giants, it would be now, in the twilight of his career.
The Giants open their preseason on August 15 against Minnesota and expect this wide receiver competition to be on full display. Even if the first-team offense is not out for long, or at all, the battle between those final three players for the last pass-catcher spot could start to sort itself out in the first of three preseason games.
OBJ still has work to do before the Giants finalize their 53-man roster, but everything he has shown in camp suggests this reunion deserves to continue into the regular season. If Beckham Jr. keeps trending in the right direction once preseason begins, it will be awfully difficult for Harbaugh to leave No. 3 off the roster.
