The NFL Combine is a great first opportunity for both incoming rookies and teams to generate interest in one another and identify potential fits.
Now that the Combine has come and gone, Giants fans have a better idea of which prospects the G-Men like in this year’s NFL Draft and a better idea of what their plan might be this offseason. Several players participated in the Combine and conducted interviews with teams at Indianapolis, but few actually stood out to John Harbaugh and Big Blue. Who could they have their eye on?
Big Blue Nation has heard several different outcomes of what the team could do at pick No. 5 in next month’s NFL Draft. We’ve heard that the team could trade down, address the wide receiver position with Carnell Tate, upgrade their secondary with Caleb Downs, or surprise us and add another running back to their already explosive backfield with Jeremiyah Love, but a familiar name has emerged this past week, and there’s one expert who loves the fit for him in New York.
Peter Schrager is crushing on Giants draft hopeful Sonny Styles
We’ve all had “draft crushes” before, and they usually start to form around this time, about a month before the draft. I’ll admit last year I had a big "draft crush" on Cam Skattebo, and we all saw how that turned out.
But wait until you hear ESPN’s Peter Schrager hype up Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles:
Halle Berry. Sydney Sweeney. Who's your crush?

Mine is Sonny Styles.
Sorry.
And I can see him as John Harbaugh's next great LB.
Can he be the Giants pick at 5?

Last season at Ohio State, Styles had one sack, 6.5 tackles for loss, one interception, and three passes defended, earning first-team All-American honors. He also had an impressive Combine performance with a 4.46-second 40-yard dash, a 43.5-inch vertical leap, and an 11-foot-2-inch broad jump at 6-foot-5, 244 lbs, which solidifies him as a top-10 pick and potentially top-five.
It’s no secret the Giants like the 21-year-old, as reports were coming out of Indianapolis all of last week about how well their meeting went with Styles, how they are interested in him at pick No. 5, and how he could be the perfect fit for Harbaugh’s defense, which in the past his defense have been led by talented linebackers such as Ray Lewis, CJ Mosley, and Roquan Smith.
With Micah McFadden and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles expected to hit free agency, and the Giants officially releasing Bobby Okereke, which will save them approximately $9 million, they will have the opportunity to bolster their linebacker core.
Their linebacker room consists of Darius Muasau, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux, who may be traded this offseason, opening up another roster spot on defense, which is where Styles would come into play for the Giants.
