We all know how the sayings go, "Whoever smelt it, dealt it, and whoever denied it, supplied it." They're simple, yet damning statements, aimed at extinguishing deflection and exposing the truth... on who may have farted.
While passing gas might seem taboo to write about, the truth is everyone does it—including celebrities, elected officials, and even athletes, both former and current.
We're here to talk about one of those former athletes who just so happened to play quarterback for the New York Giants, Phil Simms. For those who don’t remember, Simms was in the CBS booth calling the game alongside Jim Nantz. In the middle of dissecting a play, it appeared Simms farted on Nantz, which led to an interesting interaction.
During the 2017 AFC Wild Card game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins, Phil Simms waved his hand toward Jim Nantz like he was wafting a fart in his direction, prompting the longtime CBS announcer to step out of the shot.
“I think it’s warmed up though, Jim,” Simms said with a cheeky smile after getting a whiff. “Just to talk about the atmosphere of the game, what do you think? Are you warmer now than you were earlier in the game?”
“I’m fine,” Nantz said after getting up and nearly leaving the booth. “I’m worried about you.” The "worried about you" line was the most telling and put Simms firmly in the spotlight and on fart watch.
Phil Simms vehemently denies he farted in the booth alongside Jim Nantz
WFAN morning hosts Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti recently had Simms on their show to poke some fun at his expense and play him the clip—with an added fart noise—to ultimately get to the bottom (pun intended) of fart-gate.

Simms denied any and all implications of the event. Gio pressed him further by asking, “Are you denying that ever happened? You didn’t fart? You didn’t box in Jim Nantz with your farts?”
Simms did what any potential person caught in the act would do—deny, deny, deny: “I’m telling you, I didn’t do it,” Simms implored. “I would own up to it. Swear on my children’s heads. What else do you want me to do? I’m telling you, I didn’t do it.” That level of denial doesn't necessarily help his case. It almost makes it feel like he did it even more.
Unfortunately, the world may never know what truly happened in that smelly broadcast booth on the night of the Steelers-Dolphins game eight years ago. However, it's important to note that it’s been over eight years since the incident, which just so happens to be the same amount of time since Simms was replaced by Tony Romo. Hmm. Chalk it up to coincidence all you like, but something smells fishy here.
All jokes aside, Simms’ infamous booth moment is a perfect metaphor for the 2024-25 Giants—except their stench might linger even longer in franchise history, because they flat-out stunk.
